- This wine was a bit of a puzzle when I tasted it, and the one I most regretted having to leave after only half an hour. The deepest gold of the lot, it was also by far the biggest and boldest in build but did not develop very much subtlety of aroma during the time I had to look at it (as we say). Such smells as there were were of candied fruits, perhaps candied pineapple. There was sweetness on the front of the palate and a bit of alcoholic heat on the end. Because it was so big, I ached for just a little more acidity, particularly with memories of its immediate successor still so fresh and impressive (see below). read more...

- Deep green gold already with an intensely heady, deep-flavoured nose already hinting at acidity and savour. Extremely expressive with lime leaves, liquorice and smoke all evident. Great breadth and texture even at this early stage, although of course it is still chewy and substantial. A monument of a wine that is long and seductive. Aubert de Villaine suggested this particular vintage will not need excessively long ageing and suggests drinking it around 2012. So now you know.
