Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 96-97Just as this years Echezeaux challenges the quality of the Grands-Echezeaux, another surprise of the vintage is a spectacular showing for the 2005 Romanee-St.-Vivant. A startlingly dark, mouth-watering amalgam of purple plum paste, blackberry preserves, bitter chocolate, toasted walnut, soy, and raw beef intrigues the nose. On the palate, this cleaves to the dark side, with viscous, mouth-coating concentration of lightly-cooked black fruits, charred meat, mysterious forest floor complexity, and bitter-sweet florality, but simultaneously delivers a vibratory finish like that of the energetic Grands-Echezeaux. With its palpable extract, profound personality, and refined but abundant tannins, this is surely wine to set aside for at least a decade.

Good full red. Pretty, nuanced aromas of red fruits, flowers and tobacco. Wonderfully tactile and juicy, with terrific acid cut giving grip to the sappy red berry and saline flavors. Finishes with sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume. This struck me as exuberant and expansive for a grand cru from this year - and that's hardly a complaint. A big success for this cuvée.

The 2005 Echezeaux delivers ravishingly sweet, high-toned aromas of black raspberry, maraschino, marzipan, marmalade and iodine. It saturates the palate with sweet, ripe fruit and inner-mouth perfume, while introducing layers of fresh meat and shrimp-shell minerality. The texture is amazingly creamy and polished, and the long, refined finish adds an alluring hint of mocha. Superb saturation of ultra-ripe fruit but with freshness; remarkable concentration yet elegance, lift, indeed near weightlessness: this is 2005 at its best. The temptation to drink this in its early years will, I suspect, be irresistible... let's hope so anyway. It would be a shame for this beauty to be locked away as a collectible, even if it is capable of long-aging.

Deep ruby. A penetrating nose of moderately high-toned spicy black fruit trimmed in violets and floral notes that lead to supple but intense flavors that are rich and refined with excellent finishing energy and more refinement than I usually find her... Burghound. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 2004 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezeaux 750ml
