Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 1997

Winemaker's Notes:

Bright, consistent, firm ruby colour to rim. The nose expands slowly to reveal intense, perfumed fruits and a concentrated earthy, stony richness. The palate has fine depth and richness, a seductive structure and a full, satisfying, generous finish.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Very good dark red. Superripe aromas of chocolate, leather and Cuban tobacco. Ripe and textured, but currently a bit dominated by its tannic structure and thus hiding its flavors. Still, this is rather gentle compared to recent vintages of this wine. Stephen Tanzer. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 1997 Romanee Conti, Domaine de la Romanee St Vivant 750ml

Good deep red. Charred oak, redcurrant, cherry and tobacco on the nose. Fat and sweet, with good but not outstanding depth of flavor and an enticing delicacy. The tannins are round and soft, and the finishing fruit lush and sweet. Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 1997 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezeaux 750ml

Beautiful ripe fruit and elegant structure in this gorgeous Pinot Noir. Full-bodied, with sweet tannins and refined flavors of wild raspberries, cherries and cassis. Tannins clamp down on the finish. An expressive nose amply reflects the ripeness of the '97 vintage with its floral and spicy black berry fruit aromas that are both elegant and refined while transitioning into rich, sweet and full-bodied flavors that possess good muscle and solid if ... Good deep red. Lovely earthy redcurrant perfume dominates the nose, which is more vibrant and deeper than that of the Echezeaux. Sappy and sweeter, with a stronger impression of extract and ripeness. More solidly structured and longer than the Echeze... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 1997 Romanee Conti, Domaine de la Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 750ml
