Winemaker's Notes:

"Violets, roses, raspberries, and red cherries emanate from the 2003Richebourg. Full-bodied, deep, and hugely concentrated, it is muscular, firmand displays the firmest structure of the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti's 2003s.Soy sauce, tar, chocolate, and dark fruits are found in its focused, audaciouspersonality. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less

Red-ruby. Superripe, slightly reduced aromas of plum, roasted redcurrant and menthol. Thick but sappy, and a bit hardened by the carbonic gas. Big, chewy, dense and tannic, without this wine's usual elegance. 88-91 points Stephen Tanzer. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 2003 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezeaux 750ml

Bright, full ruby-red. Perfumed, slightly reduced aromas of cassis and violet. A massive wine of compelling sweetness, with powerful but delineated black fruit flavors supported by a powerful tannic spine. This has a very serious structure for a 200... Stephen Tanzer. ($910) Bright ruby-red. Sweet, sappy aromas of dark raspberry and chocolate. Superconcentrated, dense and rich; large-scaled, weighty and mouthfilling. An incredibly fine and pure aromatic profile that is first and foremost ripe but this does not detract from the usual La Tâche aromatic fireworks as the highly perfumed, seductive, spicy and pungent floral notes makes for an utterly brilliant nose th...
