Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less

The 2005 La Tache epitomizes the unique mysteries of Pinot (not to mention the character of a great site), with its aromas of game, musk, iris, star anise, vanilla, allspice, and naturally also an abundance of sweet, ripe, implosively tiny-berried fruit. Imagine a black Riesling. On the palate, a vivid freshness of fruit, pungency of spice and flowers, and melting away of what in point of analytical fact are abundant tannins, all engender an almost white wine dynamic of fruit-mineral call-and-response and clear, incisive penetration of flavors to every recess of the mouth. This is a T.R. sort of wine - you just don't feel the stick.

Soy sauce, candied blood oranges, and dark cherries make up the nose of the outstanding 2002 La Tache. Extremely elegant and pure, this light to medium-bodied wine displays a superb satiny texture and a broad blackberry, black cherry, spice, and mineral-flavored character. It boasts a refined, noble personality with an exceedingly long, supple finish. The qualitative and ripeness differences between this wine and the Richebourg is striking as well as confounding. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.

Good bright, deep red. Wonderfully perfumed, nuanced nose offers raspberry, smoke, earth, white truffle and this vineyard's typical cocktail of Oriental spices. Compellingly silky-sweet and suave on the palate, with great aromatic lift to the red fruit, spice and mineral flavors. This offers a rare combination of high and low tones on the nose and palate. Taut and sharply focused wine, finishing with superb, palate-saturating minerally persistence and great finesse of tannins. A great 2004.

Good deep, bright red. Deep aromas of cherry, raspberry, minerals and Asian spices, lifted by a floral quality. Fat, sweet and full but lively; offers great volume without any undue weight. This shows exciting inner-palate energy and finishes with a sexy, deep core of spice. Very pretty, and very long. A superb showing today.

Glorious and incredibly seductive, with a complex swirl of fruit, herbs and spice. Bold, sleek and velvety, pleasingly redolent of fresh-picked grape stems, but surrounded by ripe raspberry and cherry flavors. It evens out with hints of leather, toast, crème brûlée, rose petals, citrus and toast on the long, lingering finish.

Limpid garnet. Absolutely stunning aromas of pure cherry, strawberry and raspberry mark this La Tâche. It's vibrant, balanced and very elegant, with ripe fruit and tannins and a long finish. Very promising future. La Tâche non-blind vertical. Best from 2020 through 2040.

This too is sublime in its subtlety and grace with ineffably pure aromas and it strikes a balance between the opulence of the RSV and the restraint of the GE with an expressive yet ultra fine nose of rose petals, violets and seductive spice notes tha...
