Domaine de la Romanée-Conti la Tâche 1988

Winemaker's Notes:

The Domaine purchased most of the 6.06 hectares La Tâche in 1933, completingthe vineyards by exchanging small plots in Les Gaudichots. It stretches fromthe top to the bottom of the mid slope band which contains the grand crus, thuscovering a complexity of terroirs. It is a more flamboyant wine than RomanéeConti but needs a minimum of 10 years for all its aspects, including thetannins, to integrate.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less

April 1991 - Tight and beautifully focused, with a laser beam of plum, raspberry and tart cherry flavor, hinting at cola and spice around the edges, nailed in place by lavish tannins and sharp acidity. It's an age-worthy package, already showing a gl... Wine Spectator. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 1988 Romanee Conti, Domaine de la Richebourg Grand Cru 750ml

In 1988 there are 575 cases of Romanee-Conti. Consumers should be deliriously happy, considering there were only 225 cases in 1987. It is more backward than the 1987, 1986, or 1985, and is one of the fullest and most tannic examples of Romanee-Conti ... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Deep and concentrated, with lots of smoky nutmeg and tea overtones to the core of plum and cherry flavor, hinting at violet on the nose. Very firm and tannic; will need until 2000 to soften. Should age well. 1,000 cases made. Wine Spectator. A Pinot Noir wine from Burgundy in France. 1988 Romanee Conti, Domaine de la Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 750ml
