Domaine de la Romanee Conti Echezeaux 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Powerful nose with a light touch of animal notes. In the mouth, the attack is supple, then the wine becomes firmer, but after aeration for ten to fifteen minutes, the pleasant, round character of Échézeaux expresses itself.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, located in Vosne-Romanée, is one of the most prestigious vineyard sites in Burgundy, France. The domaine boasts seven Grand Cru properties, and the two monopolies (meaning they are owned and operated by the domaine itself) La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are considered the finest vineyards in all of Burgundy. The other five - Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Grands Ėchezaux, Ėchezaux and Montrachet  (which overlaps with Chassagne) - are also among the upper echelon. With the exception of the Chardonny-only Montrachet, Domaine de La Romanée-Conti is known for producing exceptional, rare reds from Pinot Noir, prized for their structured fruit, perfume and longevity.  The vineyard had already been named Romanée since the 13th century when it was first acquired by the de Croonembourg family. The hyphenation is derived from a 1760 bidding war between Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV and Louis François ler de Bourbon, Prince de Conti. You can guess who won.  These vineyard are on slopes facing east and south-east for optimal grape-ripening exposure, with iron-rich limestone and marl soils. Some of the vines are quite old by Burgundy standards, up to 50 years, which adds to the power of the wines. The small production wines are from vineyards that are organically cultivated, with yields kept low.  Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

The 2005 Richebourg suggests lightly cooked cherry, lilies, and vanilla-chocolate pot de creme, coming onto the palate with a gentle wave of creamy fruit, almost shockingly open-knit and youthfully generous. The 2005 La Tache epitomizes the unique mysteries of Pinot (not to mention the character of a great site), with its aromas of game, musk, iris, star anise, vanilla, allspice, and naturally also an abundance of sweet, ripe, implosively tiny-berried fr... Wine Advocate ReviewRated 94-95The 2005 Echezeaux delivers ravishingly sweet, high-toned aromas of black raspberry, maraschino, marzipan, marmalade and iodine. It saturates the palate with sweet, ripe fruit and inner-mouth perfume, while introducing layers of fresh meat and shrimp-shell minerality. The texture is amazingly creamy and polished, and the long, refined finish adds an alluring hint of mocha. Superb saturation of ultra-ripe fruit but with freshness; remarkable concentration yet elegance, lift, indeed near weightlessness: this is 2005 at its best. The temptation to drink this in its early years will, I suspect, be irresistible ... lets hope so anyway. It would be a shame for this beauty to be locked away as a collectible, even if it is capable of long-aging.

The 2005 Grands-Echezeaux displays an utterly different, less charming personality than its "little" sibling. Fresh black raspberry and black cherry hover between sorbet-like and faintly-caramelized manifestations. The palate is obviously dense, with... Robert Parker. Unparalleled complexity on the nose. Berries and briar patch and smoke transforming into dried thyme. Cherry on the palate also salty minerals. Astounding length and potential to age.
