Domaine de la Mordorée Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

"The purple-colored 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reine des Bois is loaded. Although still primary and backward, it reveals an extraordinary depth of juicy blackberry and cassis fruit interwoven with notes of roasted herbs, meat juices, camphor, and a touch of licorice. The wine boasts great depth, a superb texture, and a full-bodied richness nicely framed by high yet velvety tannins and fresh acidity. The vintage’s remarkable aromatic complexity and freshness are apparent in this big, substantial, authoritative wine. It will need 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for 20-25 years...96-97+." WA 10/08This superb Chateauneuf du Pape estate is run by Chrisophe Delorme and his brother from their cellars in Tavel. They produce spectacular Chateauneuf du Papes as well as top-notch Liracs, and glorious Cotes du Rhones and Tavel roses. Their Chateauneuf du Papes have been recognized by the village vignerons in their Festival of St.-Marc, where Mordoree frequently finishes first or second in those blind tastings.

Tested at 70 deg F on well-aired bottle (3 hrs). Attractive nose of animal fur, tar, meaty-gamey notes, sweet warm spices (e.g. ginger), red and darker fruit. In the mouth same taste, a bit thinnish but still intense with flavors listed for the nose. Finish was delightful, almost ethereal with licorice herb and wood "surfing away" on a wave of warmth (probably from the alcohol). Dry to off dry. Body medium, acid medium, tannin medium.

Nice fruit, raspberries with a touch of tobacco. Nice structure, but very young and bright.

Solid opaque purple core with brighter rim. Pleasing aromas of blackberry, raspberry and plum are wonderfully contrasted by pepper notes and a light floral touch. Full bodied and rich, spicy dark fruit recedes gradually on the long finish, joined by... John Perry. A Proprietary Blend wine from Rhone in France. 2007 Domaine de la Mordoree Lirac la Dame Rousse 750ml

The 2009 Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape Cuveacute;e de la Reine des Bois (made from an identical blend with an identical upbringing) is also one of the most impressive efforts of the vintage. However, Christophe Delorme and his brother, Fabrice, have fashioned so many great Reine des Bois, it is difficult to say if it will turn out better than the 2007, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000 or 1998. Among the most concentrated Chacirc;teauneufs of the vintage, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as copious aromas of blueberries, blackberries, melted licorice and spring flowers. This full-bodied offering reveals rich, pure fruit notes, a multidimensional mouthfeel and extraordinary elegance and freshness. It is a tour de force achievement that requires 2ndash;4 years of bottle age; it should last for 15ndash;20+ years. Bravo!

Inky ruby. The nose offers a highly complex, wild array of dark berry and floral scents, along with anise, herbs and smoky minerals. Utterly stains the palate with deep black and blue fruit flavors complemented by strong notes of lavender pastille and tobacco. Tannins come up with air but the fruit seems to suck them up. Finishes with a strong wallop of luscious blueberry and mocha and outstanding persistence. This looks to be one of the best wines of this superb vintage.

Inky violet color. Rich, smoky and deep on the nose, with powerful scents of chocolate, creme de mure and kirsch, tinged by candied violet and cracked pepper. Concentrated and lush, with a round, velvety texture and abundant sweet plum, blackberry and mocha flavors. Finishes with ripe, round tannins, a very sweet note of cassis, and great length.
