Domaine de la Mordorée Red Rhone Blend Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 2007
"The purple-colored 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Reine des Bois is loaded. Although still primary and backward, it reveals an extraordinary depth of juicy blackberry and cassis fruit interwoven with notes of roasted herbs, meat juices, camphor, and a touch of licorice. The wine boasts great depth, a superb texture, and a full-bodied richness nicely framed by high yet velvety tannins and fresh acidity. The vintage’s remarkable aromatic complexity and freshness are apparent in this big, substantial, authoritative wine. It will need 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for 20-25 years...96-97+." WA 10/08This superb Chateauneuf du Pape estate is run by Chrisophe Delorme and his brother from their cellars in Tavel. They produce spectacular Chateauneuf du Papes as well as top-notch Liracs, and glorious Cotes du Rhones and Tavel roses. Their Chateauneuf du Papes have been recognized by the village vignerons in their Festival of St.-Marc, where Mordoree frequently finishes first or second in those blind tastings.

Tested at 70 deg F on well-aired bottle (3 hrs). Attractive nose of animal fur, tar, meaty-gamey notes, sweet warm spices (e.g. ginger), red and darker fruit. In the mouth same taste, a bit thinnish but still intense with flavors listed for the nose. Finish was delightful, almost ethereal with licorice herb and wood "surfing away" on a wave of warmth (probably from the alcohol). Dry to off dry. Body medium, acid medium, tannin medium.
Nice fruit, raspberries with a touch of tobacco. Nice structure, but very young and bright.
Three and a half glasses

A brilliant wine, and again there will be two cuveacute;es, Christophe Delormersquo;s 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois has a wonderful, gorgeous black/purple color and a beautifully sweet nose of blackberries, scorched earth, graphite, tobacco leaf, and Provencal herbs and spice. Inky, pure, full-bodied, and tannic with good acidity, this wine is going to require patience. Anticipated maturity: 2013ndash;2025+.
Sadly, Mordoree owns only ten acres in Chateauneuf du Pape, so production is limited. However, the wines are consistently brilliant. The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois, a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah, Vaccarese, and Cinsault, was 100% destemmed, and was aged in tank (one-third) and a combination of new, 1, 2, and 3-year old French barrels (two-thirds). At 15.5% alcohol, this is no wimpish wine. It is full-bodied and elegant, with a dense purple color, a big, chewy richness, tremendous purity, and notes of smoke, creosote, black raspberries, cassis, and cherries. Deep and opulent with noticeably high tannin in the finish, this large-scaled, substantial Chateauneuf should hit its peak in 4ndash;6 years, and last for two decades.
The outrageously superb 2007 Lirac La Reine des Bois (equal parts Grenache, Mourvedre, and Syrah) may be the finest wine Delorme has yet made. Its dense purple color is accompanied by a sumptuous perfume of black fruits, licorice, earth, and pepper. ... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Since 1996, their Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois has been one of the stars of the vintage. The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de la Reine des Bois boasts a dense purple color, a full-bodied, opulent style, moderately high tannin, sensational concentration, and abundant aromas and flavors of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, and spice. It is a meaty, fleshy, tannic effort that brings to mind the 1998. A brilliant wine for the vintage, it should be exceptionally long lived. Anticipated maturity: 2010ndash;2025.
The 2009 Chacirc;teauneuf du Pape Cuveacute;e de la Reine des Bois (made from an identical blend with an identical upbringing) is also one of the most impressive efforts of the vintage. However, Christophe Delorme and his brother, Fabrice, have fashioned so many great Reine des Bois, it is difficult to say if it will turn out better than the 2007, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000 or 1998. Among the most concentrated Chacirc;teauneufs of the vintage, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as copious aromas of blueberries, blackberries, melted licorice and spring flowers. This full-bodied offering reveals rich, pure fruit notes, a multidimensional mouthfeel and extraordinary elegance and freshness. It is a tour de force achievement that requires 2ndash;4 years of bottle age; it should last for 15ndash;20+ years. Bravo!
