Domaine de la Janasse Red Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône Villages Terre d'Argile 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

"A ripe, modern styled Côtes du Rhône that comes from pebble and clay soils located north of the town of Courthézon, the 2009 Terre d'Argile is a blend of equal parts Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre that has the Syrah and Mourvèdre aged in small barrels (1/3 new) and the Grenache in vat. Despite the stint in oak, it is more the upfront, powerful ripeness that gives this cuvee its modern slant, as the oak is barely discernable. Displaying first-rate aromatics of ripe blackberry, licorice, loamy earth, spice cabinet, and hints of minerality, this medium to full-bodied, fleshy wine delivers gorgeous levels of texture, a balanced, clean feel, and ripe tannin on the finish. Very well done and a solid combination of upfront fruit and underlying balance and poise, this should continue to shine for upwards of a decade...91" RR 9/11 "The 2009 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Terre d’Argile is sensational. Notes of black currants and cherries as well as hints of charcoal, truffle, new saddle leather and earth all jump from the glass of this blend of 70% Grenache and the rest mostly Mourvedre with a touch of Carignan. Aged completely in foudres and older small barrels, it is dense ruby/purple, full-bodied, opulent, and ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years...91" WA 10/11

Aimé SABON comes back from his military duty in 1967 and takes over his father's vineyards (who was bringing his grapes into cooperative cave) and father-in-law's vineyards (who was selling the wine). He builds his cave in 1973 and thus creates the domain of La Janasse, from the name of family camp located in Courthezon. His ambition will be to enlarge the domain by acquiring new vineyards of different varieties, going from 15 ha to 55 ha nowadays. In 1991, after a BTA in winemaking and oenology at Beaune and a BTS in marketing at Macon, Christophe joins his father who leaves him the responsability of the cave. He will create the different vintages and develop the marketing of the domain. Isabelle, the sister of Christophe and also oenologist, joins the team in 2001. Nowadays, all SABON family members work together on the domain : * Aimé SABON : vineyards * Hélène SABON : accountancy - administrative * Isabelle SABON : marketing - vinification * Christophe SABON : vineyards - vinification - marketing Read less

This is pure, driven and well-rounded, with a beam of kirsch, crushed plum and bright red currant fruit coursing through, backed by lingering red licorice, violet and sweet tobacco notes. The long finish is still tight. Best from 2011 through 2025. Wine Spectator "Insider", Aug 25 2010, James Molesworth "A tiny quantity of 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes was produced. It, too, has much more Mourvedre in the blend than usual (close to 30%) combined with 70% old vine Grenache (60-100+ years of age). The Mourvedre was aged in small barrels and the Grenache in tank. One of the vintage's most brilliant Chateauneuf du Papes, it boasts a dense purple color as well as notes of charcoal, toast, chocolate, blackberries, cassis, licorice, and earth. This full-bodied, brilliant 2008 should drink beautifully for 10-15 years - atypical for this vintage." Wine Advocate #185 Oct 2009, Robert Parker

The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is one of the vintage's most compelling wines. Most of the fruit for this offering comes from the estate vineyards in La Crau, and it is usually a blend of 80% Grenache (aged in tank and foudre) and the re... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Very inviting, with lush blueberry, fig sauce and blackberry fruit aromas and flavors, backed by alluring spice and black tea notes. The long, round, juicy finish is stylish as well. The blockbuster 2007 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Terre d'Argile, which comes from red clay soils, is a blend of 75% Grenache and 25% Mourvedre. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of black raspberries, blueberries, freshly grilled mushrooms... Robert Parker. Vintage: 2006 01/08/2014

The dense purple-colored 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape, 80% foudre-aged Grenache and 20% Syrah and Mourvedre aged in small barrels, offers a beautiful bouquet of blackberries, roasted meats, sweet herbs, and new saddle leather. Full-bodied and super-concentrated with no hard edges, it should drink beautifully for 12–15 years.

The limited production Cuvee Vieilles Vignes (70% Grenache and 30% Syrah and Mourvedre) was rocking when I tasted it.
