Aimé SABON comes back from his military duty in 1967 and takes over his father's vineyards (who was bringing his grapes into cooperative cave) and father-in-law's vineyards (who was selling the wine). Aimé SABON comes back from his military duty in 1967 and takes over his father's vineyards (who was bringing his grapes into cooperative cave) and father-in-law's vineyards (who was selling the wine). He builds his cave in 1973 and thus creates the domain of La Janasse, from the name of family camp located in Courthezon. His ambition will be to enlarge the domain by acquiring new vineyards of different varieties, going from 15 ha to 55 ha nowadays. In 1991, after a BTA in winemaking and oenology at Beaune and a BTS in marketing at Macon, Christophe joins his father who leaves him the responsability of the cave. He will create the different vintages and develop the marketing of the domain. Isabelle, the sister of Christophe and also oenologist, joins the team in 2001. Plush, with delicious purity to the crushed plum, macerated currant and warm fig flavors. Dark and racy through the finish, with a mouthwatering graphite edge. Superlong and precise. Drink now through 2019.

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape, which is 80% Grenache aged in tank or foudre and the rest, Mourvedre and Syrah, aged in small barrels, is a strong effort. Dense ruby/purple with a sweet nose of flowers, blackberries, sweet raspberry liqueur and Provencal herbs, it is dense, rich, medium to full-bodied, but pure, stylish, and delicious already. It should continue to evolve for a dozen or more years.

A true sleeper of the vintage, and a wine to buy by the case given its reasonable price is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. This blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah and Mourvedre from 40-year-old vines was aged 80% in tank and the rest in small oak. Its dense purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of creme de cassis, kirsch, incense, spice box, and a touch of toast. Deep and multidimensional with huge glycerin, great acids, and sweet tannins, this massive 2007 is accessible now, and should last for 15-20+ years.

Deep ruby. Fresh raspberry and strawberry aromas are elegant and precise. Bright, racy and poised, with sweet red fruit and gentle mineral flavors and a distinctly silky texture. Finishes impressively pure and long, with precise red fruit flavors.

The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape has a deep black/purple color and a sweet nose of charcoal, black cherries, raspberry, and some Provencal herbs and pepper. In the mouth itandrsquo;s tannic and clearly a vin de garde with refreshing acidity, real vibrancy, but surprising power and length. As Christophe Sabon said, andldquo;Itandrsquo;s a wine that comes across as feminine because of the high acids and low pH, but then the finished alcohol is close to fifteen percent!andrdquo; Give this wine 3andndash;5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following fifteen as it will be extremely long-lived.

Dark and concentrated, with solid grip for the vintage helping to push the black fig, currant, mocha, bittersweet cocoa and Turkish coffee notes through the long, juicy finish. Drink now through 2028.
