Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin 2016

Winemaker's Notes:

"Made with close to 50% stems (the highest in a while) and brought up in foudre and demi-muids (20% new), the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin sports deep ruby/purple color as well as sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, crushed flowers, crushed rocks, and incense. Just a huge, rich, unctuous wine, it offers everything you could want from Grenache and is certainly going to challenge the 2007 and 2010 as the greatest expression of this terroir to date." - Jeb Dunnuck *(97-100 Points)*

Aimé SABON comes back from his military duty in 1967 and takes over his father's vineyards (who was bringing his grapes into cooperative cave) and father-in-law's vineyards (who was selling the wine). He builds his cave in 1973 and thus creates the domain of La Janasse, from the name of family camp located in Courthezon. His ambition will be to enlarge the domain by acquiring new vineyards of different varieties, going from 15 ha to 55 ha nowadays. In 1991, after a BTA in winemaking and oenology at Beaune and a BTS in marketing at Macon, Christophe joins his father who leaves him the responsability of the cave. He will create the different vintages and develop the marketing of the domain. Isabelle, the sister of Christophe and also oenologist, joins the team in 2001. Nowadays, all SABON family members work together on the domain : * Aimé SABON : vineyards * Hélène SABON : accountancy - administrative * Isabelle SABON : marketing - vinification * Christophe SABON : vineyards - vinification - marketing Read less

The nose was plush with ripe blackberry fruits, violet candies, herbs and sweet spices. On the palate, it was velvety with intense concentration, yet balanced with acidity that kept it fresh and juicy. Sweet blackberry, cola and violets from the bouquet filled the senses. The finish was remarkably long with lasting dark fruits that seemed to change from ripe to tart as they melted from the palate

The nose was elegant yet with razor sharp intensity, giving aromas of crushed blackberry, currants, dark chocolate, pencil led and sweet exotic spices, which filled the senses. On the palate, it was like velvet but with an acid profile that kept it lively and fresh as flavors of raspberry, black cherry liquor, licorice and herbs flowed into the long finish, which saturated the palate with dark berries, peppery spice, and hints of tannin.

The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin, which I was able to taste (and drink) from multiple bottles, is a beautiful Grenache that comes from the cooler, northeastern edge of the appellation. Coming almost all from the Chapouin lieu-dit (it gets a small bit from La Janasse), it gives up the classic notes of black berries, spring flowers, violets, and licorice that I always seem to find in this cuvee. Building nicely on the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, has tons of sweet fruit and solid, if not firm, tannin that come out on the finish. It will be better in another couple of years and have 15+ years of overall longevity.

Dense but refined, showing layers of fig, boysenberry and blackberry paste offset with notes of anise, fruitcake, allspice, mulled plum and black tea. Exhibits a silky feel through the finish, with lots of sneaky length as an iron accent lingers gracefully. Best from 2015 through 2030. 390 cases imported.

Also showing the purity and freshness of the vintage, the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin, which was harvested towards the end of September, displays classic licorice, crushed violets, flowers and mineral-tinged black fruits to go with a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced and lively feel on the palate. Always 100% Grenache that comes from very old vines and sandy soils, it is one impressive tank sample. Give it a couple years in the cellar and enjoy bottles over the following decade or longer. Drink 2015–2027.

Deep ruby. Dark berries, incense, candied flowers and minerals on the highly perfumed nose. Offers sweet black raspberry and lavender flavors that become spicier with aeration. Fine-grained and sappy, with excellent finishing clarity and smooth, harmonious tannins adding grip. This sexy Chateauneuf will likely be delicious soon after release, but it has the concentration to strongly suggest that patience will be rewarded.

Dark ruby. Black and blue fruit scents show serious power and excellent focus. Sappy, expansive and alluringly sweet, offering palate-staining boysenberry and cherry-cola flavors and a touch of spicecake. Floral and mineral notes build on the potent finish, which is framed by smooth, fully absorbed tannins.

Bright kirsch, bitter cherry and pomegranate notes are lined with hints of shiso leaf and plum pit. Lively acidity holds the finish, while this fleshes out steadily in the glass, showing darker anise and blackberry notes, with subtle minerality. Best from 2014 through 2026.
