Domaine de Durban Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise 2005

Member Review by duncan 906:

This bottle was part of a lot I bought on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/64493.Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise is an AOC created in 1945 for sweet white wines made from the muscat grapes [noir and blanc ] from around the village of that name about 15 miles east of the town of Orange on the southerly facing slopes of a limestone hill called Dentelles de Montmirail. The wines are made by adding grape spirit to stop the process of fermentation and thus leaving sugar in the wine. The AOC rules specify 15% alchol.Such wines have been made in the area since at least the Romans.Today Domaine de Durban is one of the leading producers.I drank my bottle last night [it was a 375ml bottle]with a plate of bread and Saint Agur cheese and I did enjoy it.It is a little reminiscent of a sauternes. It was sweet like honey or syrup and there was plenty of a citrus style fruit. In short, this is a lovely wine.

Domaine de Durban:
The Domaine was founded as long ago as 1159 but was bought and modernised by the Leydier family in 1967.There are 56 hectares spread over four appellations; Beaumes-de-Venise,Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise,Gigondas and Cotes du Rhone and they make red, white and rose wines. It is regarded as a very prestigious domaine and in 2011 the then President of France,Nicolas Sarkozy made an official visit
