- Gorgeous perfume of red and black pinot fruits laced with cassis, anise and buckets of black cherry pinot sap. Already quite complex yet remarkably elegant for Rugiens. Sleekly muscular, superbly elegant and displays outstanding length. This is not quite as rich as the Epenots but offers better acid/fruit balance and over all definition. Very classy juice.

- The young Yves Confuron has been at Domaine de Courcel since 1996 and during that time, the wines have gone from strength to strength, culminating in these superb examples. He reports that the Domaine's overall yields in 1999 were 38 hl/ha and sugars were so high that there was virtually no need for chaptalization; in fact, the Grand Clos des Epenots was harvested at a potential alcohol level of 14%. The élevage usually lasts 18 to 20 months in 25 to 30% new oak and since 1996, there has been no fining or filtration and none is expected in 99. All of these wines were tasted on my February visit.
