- Quite sumptuous, ripe fruit on the nose. Big, bold and flattering. Masses of rich, liqueur-like fruit covering stern tannins. Dry finish.

- Yves Confuron reports that he did not begin the harvest until the 26th of September, a full 9 days after the ban de vendange and we harvested slowly and sorted carefully, hoping to gain a bit more sugar but more importantly, to gain more phenolic ripeness. He somewhat ruefully joked that one job that the hail eliminated was that of effeuillage, or eliminating a certain portion of the canopy to encourage direct exposure to the sun and to encourage better air flow, which tends to reduce rot. Confuron told me that between the hail, the green harvest and triage work, yields were practically nothing coming read more...in at a maximum of 26 hl/ha and well below as three of our parcels sustained hail damage as high as 80%. In contrast to many Côte de Beaune 2001s, the density of some of the de Courcel wines is evident. As did many domaines in 2001, he noted that the malos were very slow to start and even slower to finish and the decision was made to not rack at all. The current plan is to bottle in May, without fining or filtration. (Diageo Château and Estate Wine, New York, New York). Brooding, dense, earthy, black, very ripe fruit is followed by rich, concentrated, deep, naturally sweet flavors that offer a certain velvety opulence on the finish. Quite structured but well short of hard or excessively firm; the high quality of the underlying material is evident. Very Pommard in basic character with good finishing complexity. (hide)
