Domaine de Chevalier Red Bordeaux Blend Pessac-Léognan 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"A *very good effort* from this estate located in the southern sector of Pessac-Leognan, the 2011 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot that achieved 13% natural alcohol. It offers medium body, attractive sweet red and black currant fruit, a round, supple texture, and hints of roasted herbs and damp earth. Drink this pretty, elegant effort during its first 10-15 years of life." --Robert Parker*Robert Parker rating: (87-89 pts.)**We will notify you on arrival summer 2014.*

Domaine de Chevalier is located in a clearing in the middle of a forest that protects the vines from extremes of temperature. In fact, Chevalier is a sort of secret garden, far from the limelight. This is something of a paradox for such an excellent wine, among the greatest in Bordeaux . Only a great terroir can produce a great wine... I often start out with these words when speaking about Domaine de Chevalier. They convey our fundamental philosophy, not only with regard to viticulture, but also the spirit that pervades the estate, and the men and women who work here. They improve their already considerable skills year after year on behalf of that which is most essential to a fine wine in my opinion — balance. Read less

Smoky, oaky nose, a touch stemmy with blackberry jam over cedary toast – good wild berry fruit up front, nice balance, soft tannin, good acid, tannins are a bit peppery, good length, crisp fruit on finish, hint of bitter tannin (87-88)

This is a remarkable wine with a density of fruit that reminds me of a Montrachet from a great vintage. it's full bodied, dense and rich -- almost oily -- but then it turns bright and fresh with a powerful backbone of acidity. A marvel. James Suckling. A Bordeaux Blanc wine from Bordeaux in France. 2010 Domaine de Chevalier 1500ml

An explosion of lemon, guava, grapefruit, lime and fresh picked flowers poured over wet rocks make up the perfume. Thick, rich, incredibly concentrated and intense, this dense wine has the perfect amount of acidity to feel bright and fresh. This was ... Jeff Leve. Located in Léognan, capital of the Graves, Domaine de Chevalier's history goes back a very long way. It is listed under the name ôChibaleyö (meaning chevalier, or knight, in Gascon) on the map drawn by the engineer Pierre de Belleyme in 1763. The Bernard family, major players in the French spirits industry and important shippers of great Bordeaux wines, acquired the estate in 1983. Domaine de Chevalier has been managed since that date by Olivier Bernard, who takes great pains to maintain the spirit of balance and search for perfection that has guided production at this superb estate for over 130 years. Domaine de Chevalier's red wine, one of the standard bearers of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, is an elite member of the Bordeaux great growths. White Domaine de Chevalier has remarkable ageing potential and is recognised far and wide as one of the greatest dry white wines in the world.

Bright, pale, green-tinged yellow. Explosively sappy, perfumed nose offers fresh apricot, grapefruit peel, flowers and spices. Dense yet weightless in the mouth, with wonderfully silky sweetness to the gripping flavors of lemon, flowers and spices. A... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. Limited to 1,200 cases per vintage, the white wine of Domaine de Chevalier is sought out for its class and ability to age. The white varieties are Sauvignon Blanc (70%) and Semillon (30%). The wine remains in tank on its gross lees until the middle of the second year when it is racked, leaving the fine lees, and then is racked again to barrels after the summer. The '05 is closed and backward to the nose (altogether typical of Chevalier). More expressive on the palate with great finesse and length in a tight framework. A wine that always requires patience and will reward cellaring. Distinctive and refined. Robert Parker 95, Wine Spectator 97.

Purple color of normal intensity. Aromatic and fruity nose with a nice smell of hazelnut red fruit and leather. The palate is well built pulpy on entry mellow in the middle and tasty. Finishing up on coated tannins with a hint of vividness in the persistence. Good length. A success of the vintage. Jean-Marc Quarin - www.quarin.com
