Domaine de Chevalier Red Bordeaux Blend Pessac-Léognan 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"A *very good effort* from this estate located in the southern sector of Pessac-Leognan, the 2011 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot that achieved 13% natural alcohol. It offers medium body, attractive sweet red and black currant fruit, a round, supple texture, and hints of roasted herbs and damp earth. Drink this pretty, elegant effort during its first 10-15 years of life." --Robert Parker*Robert Parker rating: (87-89 pts.)**We will notify you on arrival summer 2014.*

Domaine De Chevalier:
Domaine de Chevalier is located in a clearing in the middle of a forest that protects the vines from extremes of temperature. In fact, Chevalier is a sort of secret garden, far from the limelight. This is something of a paradox for such an excellent wine, among the greatest in Bordeaux . Only a great terroir can produce a great wine... This is something of a paradox for such an excellent wine, among the greatest in Bordeaux . Only a great terroir can produce a great wine... I often start out with these words when speaking about Domaine de Chevalier. They convey our fundamental philosophy, not only with regard to viticulture, but also the spirit that pervades the estate, and the men and women who work here. They improve their already considerable skills year after year on behalf of that which is most essential to a fine wine in my opinion — balance. Read less

Smoky, oaky nose, a touch stemmy with blackberry jam over cedary toast – good wild berry fruit up front, nice balance, soft tannin, good acid, tannins are a bit peppery, good length, crisp fruit on finish, hint of bitter tannin (87-88)

Bright, pale, green-tinged yellow. Explosively sappy, perfumed nose offers fresh apricot, grapefruit peel, flowers and spices. Dense yet weightless in the mouth, with wonderfully silky sweetness to the gripping flavors of lemon, flowers and spices. A... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. This highly regarded estate is planted with 81 acres of red grapes (65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the balance split between Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot -the last planted in 1995). The top soil is dark sand mixed with gravel over a subsoil of gravelly clay interspersed with iron-rich alios. The wine is vatted in squat stainless tanks that are wider than taller, allowing optimum extraction, and the wine undergoes malo-lactic and is aged in 50% new oak for around 21 months. Moderately dense in color, the nose is soft and creamy with muted red and black fruits. Subtle and refined, the '05 shows an expressive finish with a smoky oak note. The elegance typical of Chevalier with the extra dimension of the '05 vintage. Robert Parker 92, Wine Spectator 93.

Purple color of normal intensity. Aromatic and fruity nose with a nice smell of hazelnut red fruit and leather. The palate is well built pulpy on entry mellow in the middle and tasty. Finishing up on coated tannins with a hint of vividness in the persistence. Good length. A success of the vintage. Jean-Marc Quarin - www.quarin.com

Now consulting at Domaine de Chevalier, Stephane Derenoncourt appears to have tamed the blatant oakiness evident in previous vintages as the 2005 is one of the strongest efforts from this estate in ma... Limited to 1,200 cases per vintage, the white wine of Domaine de Chevalier is sought out for its class and ability to age. The white varieties are Sauvignon Blanc (70%) and Semillon (30%). The wine remains in tank on its gross lees until the middle of the second year when it is racked, leaving the fine lees, and then is racked again to barrels after the summer. The '05 is closed and backward to the nose (altogether typical of Chevalier). More expressive on the palate with great finesse and length in a tight framework. A wine that always requires patience and will reward cellaring. Distinctive and refined. Robert Parker 95, Wine Spectator 97.
