- The always forthright and direct Yves Confuron (who is also the Régisseur at Domaine de Courcel in Pommard), describes 2005 as clearly a very good vintage. But truly great? I'd rather watch it over time before I go running off at the mouth telling you how wonderful it is at such an early stage. However I do think it's the kind of vintage that will please everyone as it's riper than 2002 with excellent phenolics and good acid/fruit balance. Otherwise, it's the kind of vintage that you'd like to have every year as the yields were reasonable, sugars even better and it was as read more...clean as clean could be. What more could you really ask for? I believe Confuron is being prudent by letting the wines speak for themselves and speak they did. Given the style of this domaine for creating old school burgundy that ages and ages, 2005 is a bit riper, more forward and easier to comprehend. Still, it's clear that they have made some real standouts and if the Confuron wines have been a bit too structured and four square for your taste in the past, '05 might be a vintage to revisit the wines as they're softer than usual. (Dreyfus Ashby, New York, NY and Beaune Imports, Berkeley, CA; Lea & Sandeman and H&H Bancroft, UK). Note: from vines situated next to those of Faiveley and Prieur near the bottom of the slope on the Vougeot side Subtle wood spice notes highlight the reserved, fresh and even cool red and black pinot fruit aromas that merge into supple, intense and earthy flavors that are slightly wild, particularly on the amply structured and notably austere finish supported by dense but fine tannins. Good stuff here and built for the long haul. (hide)
