Domaine Clusel-Roch Cote Rotie les Grandes Places 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit simple on the nose with some reduction blowing off revealing simple red cherry fruit framed with notes of meat and earth and topped with some new wood sweetness. This stats out tight in the mouth with faint if transparent raspberry fruit then softens with air. This does have a natural feel to it and once one looks beyond the woody accents there is a classic, if small scaled Cote Rotie here. 87pts

Bright red fruit acidity. Raspberry strawberry cherry gives to some wood and minerality after open for an hour.

This cuvée makes up most of the wine we produce. It comes from vines located above the hamlet of Verenay, mainly in the place known as “La Viallière”, but also in "Champon", "Le Plomb" and "Verenay". The assemblage from these places gives fine, elegant wines, although they do have a definite tannic presence. They can be drunk in the year after bottling, to take full advantage of the youthful aromas or a few years later, when age will have added to their complexity. - Winery Grape variety: 96% Syrah 4% Viognier Age of the vines: from 10 to 50 years old. Ageing: 24 months in oak barrels (15% new), no filtration

Deep ruby. Smoky cherry and raspberry aromas are complemented by a gentle smoky nuance. Takes a darker turn with aeration, picking up notes of bitter chocolate and licorice to go along with the brighter red fruit qualities. Closes with very good clarity and thrust, leaving spicecake and red berry preserve notes behind.

Very juicy, with an intense core of raspberry and blackberry fruit layered with dashes of sweet vanilla, iron, mocha, briar and spice. The long, juicy finish lets all the components take an encore, with plenty of grip in reserve. Best from 2009 through 2018. 1,000 cases made. -JM ** Only 11 in Stock **
