150 km south west of Bordeaux, in the middle of the Armagnac region is found Domaine Chiroulet in the little village of Larroque sur l’Osse. The geographic configuration is very similar to Tuscany, with many valleys, it is used to call the Tuscany of France. Situated on the highest slopes in Gascony, at around 180 metres altitude, the Chiroulet estate owes its name to the wind which whistles “Chiroula” in the local dialect. They cultivate 45 hectares of vines aged between 10 and 40 years old. The fact that the property faces due south and any diseases are swept away by the winds - their vines have also survived the Phylloxera outbreak in 1893 - means that they produce perfectly ripe and healthy grapes every year. On this rough and generous soil, Domaine Chiroulet takes meticuluous care to make mature wines of character. This chalky-clay base, certain parts of which are composed of fine clay rather like the slopes of Saint-Emilion, is the preferred soil for the Merlot grape which constitutes 50 to 60 % of Domaine de Chiroulet red wines. It gives the wines fleshy red fruit flavour and an intense bouquet, while the Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Tanat grapes provide finesse, freshness and structure. The union between these grapes takes place through early blending in November and by being matured in oak casks for around 12 months. Read less
