Domaine Chandon Pinot Noir Carneros 2005
PHILOSOPHYWhile Domaine Chandon is best known as one of Americas top sparkling wines, the winery also produces limited quantities of varietal wines from estate-grown vineyards. These wines are crafted by drawing on experience with the traditional champagne varietals and showcasing select parcels from its Carneros ranch, where Domaine Chandon was among the pioneering growers and vintners of the region.Pinot Meunier (French for miller in reference to the powdery underside of the leaves that can look as though dusted with flour) is the soulful sibling of Pinot Noir. It plays a small but vital role in the blending of Chandon sparkling wines. Rarely planted outside of the Champagne region in France, Pinot Meunier is being discovered by only the most adventurous winemakers. Domaine Chandons experience growing Carneros Pinot Meunier for its sparkling wine programs over the past three decades has provided unique insight, allowing the winemaking team to capture the full potential of this variety to create an exceptional wine. Its distinctive character deserves a place on every wine lovers table. First made in 1989, the 2006 Pinot Meunier continues Domaine Chandons proud tradition pioneering unique wine styles. Search for this wine and you will be rewarded.VINTAGE NOTESThe 2006 growing season started late, with challenges from New Year flooding and wet weather continuing late into spring delaying budbreak. By early June, the sun came out and vines began to bloom and set fruit. Mid-Julys recordsetting ten day heat wave helped catch the vines up to a normal place in the growing season. Somewhat cooler weather arrived in August and continued through a mild Indian summer, allowing maximum hangtime and optimal flavor development just prior to harvesting the Pinot Meunier in 2006. Harvest began about two weeks later than usual and also ended late, in mid-October.TASTING NOTESWith its light brick-red color, this wine exhibits aromas of freshly ground white pepper, juniper berry and dried strawberry powder combined with hints of soft chamois leather and underlying earth tones of dried porcini mushrooms, tobacco and brown spice. On the palate, the spice and red fruit flavors are a prelude to the strawberry and dried cranberry flavors that linger on the finish. This texture of this wine is soft and approachable with light tannins, balanced acidity and a pleasant creamy mouthfeel.FOOD AND WINE PAIRINGStill Winemaker James Kress finds the complex earthiness of this wine makes it an ideal partner to grilled meat dishes that incorporate wild mushrooms, or a pork loin topped with a mountain huckleberry sauce would also be a welcome match.Winemaker: James KressVintage: 2006Harvest Dates: September 2006Appellation: CarnerosComposition: 100 % Pinot MeunierAging: 10 months 82% French oak 18% American oak- 28% New Oak Alcohol: 14.3%Case Production: 6,800 cases
Domaine Chandon is one of the most recommended wineries in the Napa Valley, and the only one with its own 4-star restaurant. The winery established its reputation with sparkling wines, and in 1989, the winery began crafting still wines from the classic Champagne varietals Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
dark fruit aromas, some dark cherry blended with earth tones, a little cinnamon and cocoa spices on the palate, nice balance of acid and tannins with a lingering dark fruit, earthy finish
Raspberries and bramble nose. Flat cherry cola and black tea with black pepper. This is a good, but PERFECTLY typical, California pinot.
A plum red wine with cherry hues, the aroma reveals layers of blackberry, plum and toffee with notes of truffle and cherry cola. The wine is very silky, with rich flavors of plum and blueberry and accents of clove and white pepper. The wine has a plush, lingering finish.
Given to us by Tom as a house warming gift - he is in the wine club. Great wine; even better two days after opening. Went well with bacon and asparagus pasta dish.
Lovely sweet spice in nose. Very delicate. Simple cherry flavors with a little leather.
Very smooth. Very fruity, you can almost taste the fruit as it came off the vine. Luscious with cherry and cassis.
Great with Beef, excellent, intoxicating aroma!!

Soft-textured, with pretty cream and toasty oak flavors along with ripe cherry- and berry-laced fruit that has attractive earthy, mineral tones. Drink now through 2006.
Plum red with cherry hues. The aroma reveals layers of blackberry, plum and toffee with notes of truffle and cherry cola. The wine is very silky, with rich flavors of plum and blueberry and accents of clove and white pepper. It has a plush, lingering finish.
Just delicious, a fascinating counterpoint to the wineryrsquo;s lsquo;01 Brut Chardonnay, with which it was coreleased. Shows a beautiful Pinotesque weight, with a cherried edge to the lime and yeast flavors. With a grand cru texture, this is really one of the best Chadon bubblies of recent memory.
Sweet scents of molasses, cherry, and leafy dried herbs pair classically with cedar and pepper. A sip reveals tobacco and dark plums. Lightweight and big on flavor, this wine is a natural for barbecue with its herbaceous, charred finish.
Medium red. Reduced aromas of smoked meat, earthy red fruits and spices. Silky, ripe and harmonious, with warm flavors of sweet red berries and cola. An expansive, rather full-blown pinot that could use a bit more precision and verve. Tannins are smooth, but the finish shows strong oakiness and a bit of alcoholic heat.
This wineryrsquo;s Pinots rarely rise to the top, but are almost always soundly made, very good wines, with extra points for complexity. The rsquo;05 is directly on par with previous vintages, a silky, dry wine showing rich flavors of cherries, cola, pomegranates and spices. Itrsquo;s the kind of Pinot that pairs well with foods without taking center stage.
Offers good richness, density and complexity of flavors, which are layered and built around wild berry, huckleberry, fresh earth and floral scents. Full-bodied, ending with a long, persistent finish. Drink now through 2015.
