Domaine Chandon Chardonnay 2011
PHILOSOPHY While Domaine Chandon is best known as one of America's top sparkling wine houses, we also produce limited quantities of still wines from estate grown vineyards. We craft these wines by drawing on our experience with the traditional champagne varieties and by showcasing select parcels from our Carneros ranch, where we were among the pioneering growers of this appellation. The Carneros terrain is of well-drained rolling hills and a cool climate due to the influence of nearby San Pablo Bay. This is perfect Pinot Noir country from which Domaine Chandon has been crafting small quantities of this varietal since 1996. As one of the most challenging yet rewarding grape varieties, we draw from three decades of Pinot Noir winegrowing experience to craft a complex and seductive wine revealing layers of ripe fruit and classic elegance. VINTAGE NOTESDestined to be a classic, this 2006 Carneros Pinot Noir exhibits aromas of dried cherries, cedar and traces of dried tobacco. As the wine opens in the glass, underlying notes of vanilla bean and the fresh scent of a strawberry patch on a warm spring afternoon become evident. TASTING NOTESWith a faint brick-red hue, this Pinot Noir tantalizes the palate with flavors of black plums, white pepper and blueberries. As a hint of bay laurel lingers on the finish, the bright acidity and well integrated tannins offer an alluring accompaniment to your dining experience. FOOD & WINE PAIRINGWinemaker James Kress suggests serving this versatile wine alongside lighter game meats such as quail or duck topped with a reduction sauce and lentils on the side. Domaine Chandon is one of the most recommended wineries in the Napa Valley, and the only one with its own 4-star restaurant. The winery established its reputation with sparkling wines, and in 1989, the winery began crafting still wines from the classic Champagne varietals Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
The color is pale and brown. The nose is fragrant, yet sour. The initial taste is bold, but is also smooth (if you can imagine this). The follow through is bitter and weak - no legs. The mouth coat is strong and leaves a sour taste in the rear of the throat. I believe that the wine was stored standing upright in the store for WAY too long, but I can only rate what I taste.
