Domaine Cauhape 'La Canopee' Jurancon Sec 2008

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought two bottles of this wine from the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/105505 for £10.50.Jurancon is an appellation created in 1936 for both dry [sec] and sweet white wines from 25 communes around the village of that name. This is located a couple of miles south of the town of Pau in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains 30 miles north of the Spanish border.Henri Ramonteu inherited the 42 hectare Domaine Cauhape and he has been one of the pioneers of the dry style Jurancon. My bottles are 100% petit manseng and were aged in oak barrels for 12 months. I started one bottle last night with my supper of fish cakes. It is certainly a very dry wine. There is plenty of a sour apricot, pineapple and grapefruit style fruit.Bland or mineral this is not.I liked it and it was a good match for the fish cakes.

A strong attachment with the earth, with the vines and the wine, combined with the magic of our 'terroir' Bearnais, led me very naturally to pursue my passion. A true enthusiast and always in pursuit of excellence, I invite you to share with me for a few moments the things that inspire me. Allow yourself to be inspired by my Jurancon wines - Jurancon sec and Moelleux. Aromas and flavours expressed in abundance. I invite you to discover the spirit 'Cauhapé' and hope you have an enjoyable visit. The parcels of Gros Manseng are principally reserved for the production of dry white wines, appreciated for their freshness and the richness of their flavours. The Petit Manseng, gathered by several passes in the vineyard, gives birth to the great sweet wines which evoke flavours of crystallized fruit, roasted notes and honey…… the true expression of 'passerillage'. (raisining of the berries). When nature is on our side, we are able to let her run her course until the winter is upon us. Then the vine offers us its last bunches shrivelled by freezing and withered by time. Read less
