Domaine Aux Moines Savennieres Roche Aux Moines 2015

External Review:

Not all vineyards pass from father to son. Dom. aux Moines is a mother / daughter operation. From one of Savennières' prestigious Grand Cru vineyards, this leesy, mineral-laden Chenin Blanc shows flavors of honey and honeydew. Don’t overchill it or you’ll miss the nuances and grace of this lovely white wine.

The estate is located at the top of the hillside bordering river La Loire and is thus the highest point of the Roche aux Moines. It enjoys a favourable microclimate and the sloping vineyard is particularly well exposed to south/south-west side of hillside. Domaine aux Moines vineyard offers the best, thanks to its exceptional location and exposition There is a micro-climate at the Domaine, thanks to its privilege orientation and ideal sunny location, sheltered from northerly wind and close to river La Loire that forms a huge water reservoir, enabling temperature regulation, neither too low in winter, nor too high in summer, and under the nearby Atlantic ocean influence, with no frost most of springs, that allows our vineyard those ideal growing circumstances. I bought this bottle of wine for £12 from the website www.cellartrade.co.uk.Savennieres is an appellation created in 1952,although viticulture here goes back to at least the monks of the medieval era,for white wines, both sweet and dry, made of the chenin blanc grape, from three communes on the north bank of the Loire around the village of that name just west of the town of Angers. Domaine aux Moines is a well known estate of the appellation.I started my bottle last night with a plate of bread and cheese. It is a dry wine but not bone dry. There is plenty of a pineapple[but nowhere near as sweet],sour apple, honey and ginger style fruit. There is certainly plenty of flavours to be going on with.Bland this is not.It went well with the cheese.

Dry, but with strong smells of honey and bees wax when first opened. Taste of honey, wax and parchment evident, as well as "sugar-less pineapple". Honey becoming less dominant as the wine breathes, with preserved pear and slighly darker notes becoming evident. Beautiful with goat's cheese.

Nose: quince, pawpaw, lemon, pineapple, lanolin, honeyed, waxy. Palate: honeyed, lanolin, waxy. Sugarless pineapple. Quince, pawpaw. Lime, lemon peel. Sharp, lively fresh acidity. Good minerallity. Long on the palate, rich and intense.
