Domaine Alary Cairanne l'Estevenas 2010

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought this bottle of wine for £10 from a wine merchant in Sussex. It is from the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. This AOC was set up in 1953 for red, white and rose wines and refers to 90 communes in the southern Rhone valley.Since 1967 18 of the communes including Cairanne are allowed to put the name of the village on the label.Cairanne village has been inhabited for millenia, was fortified in medieval times by the Knights Templar and Hospitalier and is located about 12 miles north-east of the town of Orange on the banks of the Aigues river.Domaine Alary is a well-established family owned winery in this area.My bottle is made from 85% grenache and 15% syrah from the La Font d'Estevenas vineyard on a clay and limestone hillside facing south and spent time in oak barrels.I started the bottle last night with my supper of chicken stew and I did enjoy it.There is plenty of a blackcurrant, plum, and licqorice style fruit there, there is a hint of cigar box, and the tannins are soft.It was a lovely bottle...
