This smells stemmy and composty, all feral with iron and green pepper and even a touch of celery. Fairly nicely balanced, rich and broad with sufficient acidity to perk things up a touch on the palate. There’s some nice fruit here as well, clear with both mineral and very gentle vegetal tones accenting the blueberryish fruit on the mid-palate that becomes more obvious on the finish. The finish is a touch short and tough, though the blueberry fruit and violet nuances do show some aromatic lift. Hopefully time will help this because today it is a bit ordinary at best. 84pts
Deeply flushed in appearance, the wine presents an overt nose of non-fruit elements: leather, buffalo jerky and North African spices. Cranberries, red cherries, plums and potting soil chime in on the palate. The mouthfeel is soft but balanced with an easy-going juiciness. The excellent balance helps the flavors hold on through a medium-finish. 13% abv
Dark red-more-than-purple in the glass. Oaky and smokey nose. Very pleasant on the tip of the tongue. Slight fruty sweetness--plums. As the wine travels through the palate tannis pop up along with some tartness. Very nice lingering finish. I would suggest is that this is not a wine for long aging, although it is an emminantly drinkable wine right now. US$18.99 at Costco.

89 points: Wonderfully fragrant, with spiced currant, sweet aromatic wood, and a bit of camphor. The palate is bold, with anise and licorice over roasted cherry.The palate flavors dance around with achoholic energy. It has a good balance with fine tannins that support, and later coat the mouth.

Nose of ripe cassis withhints of candied cherry and currant. Some very slight eucalyptus and sweet oak vanilla. On the palate, it's rich and dry. Ripe cassis, currant, black plum and black cherry with some light cocoa and oak spice. Good acid balance to this so it should age and progress nicely with a few more years' aging. I think Franciscan always delivers a solid moderately priced, good value Napa cab. 86 pts.

An intensely floral and spicy nose that is wonderfully elegant and admirably pure speaks of wet stone, red currant plus warm earth and sauvage hints that transfer to the muscular but precise and mineral-inflected big-bodied flavors that possess copious amounts of dry extract that buffers the very firm tannins and allowing for perfect balance on the mouth coating and linear finish. This is quite densely fruited with floral and freshly turned earth aromas adding interest to the wild and medium-toned red berry fruit. The delicious, intense and serious broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration with ample amounts of dry extract that partially buffers the chewy and ripe tannins on the long and less austere than usual finish." This rose, a blend of grenache, syrah, counoise and cinsault, is named after his mother and is a full bodied and fruited style of rose with hints of spice.
