Sweet and soft on the nose with early accents of mocha, sweet tobacco leaf, allspice and brown sugar joined by dried bay leaf and black currants. On entry this shows excellent integration and while there is plenty of acidity here, it is held nicely in check by the rich yet not weighty fruit. The oak is well measured as well, yielding a rather seamless wine with attractive herb, toast and blackcurrant flavors; elegant and bright with refreshing acidity on the moderately long finish which ends with cinnamon dusted red berry fruits. This probably won't wow many, but it drinks quite well in a rather classic modern Napa Valley style. Snappy, clean and crisp. 89pts

Tight and dark on the nose, with hints of old wood and cloves along with a dry earthiness, all lurking under blackberry fruit topped with hints of pepper and menthol. Smooth and a bit matte in the mouth, with some dry tannins embedded in a core of plummy fruit that’s framed with hints of meat, coffee and sweet spices. The mouthfeel is a bit foursquare here, with nice black cherry fruit on the finish. 88pts

This smells stemmy and composty, all feral with iron and green pepper and even a touch of celery. Fairly nicely balanced, rich and broad with sufficient acidity to perk things up a touch on the palate. There’s some nice fruit here as well, clear with both mineral and very gentle vegetal tones accenting the blueberryish fruit on the mid-palate that becomes more obvious on the finish. The finish is a touch short and tough, though the blueberry fruit and violet nuances do show some aromatic lift. Hopefully time will help this because today it is a bit ordinary at best. 84pts

Perfumed on the nose with a strong pine resin note over rich, ripe blueberry fruit. In the mouth this is soft and dry with black cherry fruit that’s wrapped in a clumsy, chunky mouthfeel. The fruit turns a bit muddied and indistinct on the finish. 84pts

Fruity on the nose with a nice underlay of toasty oak spice and vanilla and top notes of braised herbs, licorice and violets. This is smooth and supple in the mouth with an initial rush of smoky, toasty and scorched earth inner-mouth perfumes. Perhaps a bit on the tight side, this shows a fairly heavy if balanced load of load tannins in the mouth along with dark pencil lead and toast flavors over some grape, with red currants and fresh purple and blue fruits. The finish is cut short by the tannins. This has some of the hardness and underlying unyielding nature of old school winemaking. I bet this gets better with 2-5 years in the cellar. Needs an aggressive steak for dinner tonight. 90pts

Butterscotch and black cherry on the nose with just a touch of herbs and a piercing violet top note. On the palate this is very fresh with great acids and unobtrusive tannins that are very soft but add volume in the mouth. The fruit has a muddy, earthy tone that adds nice depth and a touch of complexity to the pure fruit. 88pts

Nose of quince, red currant and cranberry with lots of minerality. On the palate, the minerality turns a touch metallic. Flavors of cranberry, pomegranate and currant. Touch of strawberry. Crisp, dry and refreshing. 86 pts. 5/9/13 at winery

Nothing very special, but nothing too bad either, more like something to depend on from a wine list when nothing else seems appropriate for a specific experience...similar to the posted Wine Maker's notes: '...full-bodied; layered with blackberry, cherry, dried plums, and a hint of cocoa...'

Dark red color, berry aroma with a bit of leather. Very smooth, strong tannins, high alcohol. Good but unremarkable Cabernet flavor. Bought at Giant in Dec 2013. Enjoyed with Salena's meatloaf while watching Home Alone in front of a nice fire. Bought at Giant in Dec 2013.

Tried this for the first time on 3/22/2013. Delicious. Sandy, who prefers white, liked it better than white wines.

Deeply flushed in appearance, the wine presents an overt nose of non-fruit elements: leather, buffalo jerky and North African spices. Cranberries, red cherries, plums and potting soil chime in on the palate. The mouthfeel is soft but balanced with an easy-going juiciness. The excellent balance helps the flavors hold on through a medium-finish. 13% abv

Another lively 2013 with lemon peel minerals and blueberries. Medium body with fine tannins and a bright delicious finish. Delicate. Tangy and bright. Only 1 000 cases instead of the usual 4 000. 92% merlot and 8% cabernet franc. James Suckling.

Rock-solid, with a hefty core of fig, blackberry and black cherry fruit, wrapped in chestnut and tobacco leaf notes and carrying through a lavender- and tar-framed finish. Dense and grippy, showing a slightly old-school shading. Should cellar well. Best from 2016 through 2030.

Bright ruby. Intense raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by hints of lavender, spicecake and blood orange. Juicy and fruit-driven, with palate-coating flavors of sweet, spice-tinged red fruits and candied flowers. Quite suave and seamless, boasting striking purity to its red fruit- and mineral-driven finish. Those who decry the ripeness and heady character of most Chateauneufs owe it to themselves to try this wine.

Lastly, the flagship 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape is a classically structured, elegant effort that will evolve gracefully on its balance and harmony. Showing the telltale seaweed, currants, olive, licorice and ample minerality so common in this cuvee, it’s medium to full-bodied, lightly textured and focused on the palate, with plenty of tannin. It needs 3–4 years of cellaring and will have 15–20 years of longevity.

The top wine of the estate, the 2012 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape (which is always a blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvedre and 5% Cinsault and other grapes, from 65-year-old vines) is a classic example of the cuvee and possesses gorgeous aromatics (kirsch, garrigue, big minerality and background meatiness), medium to full-bodied richness and a firm, tannic spine. As is common, it will require a handful of years in the cellar to come around and have 15+ years of longevity. Drink 2016–2027.

Very fresh with lots of brightly defined red currant damson plum anise violet and white pepper notes. The lacy but persistent structure and energetic acidity lead to a long tobacco-filled finish. Tasted non-blind.
