Dom Perignon Oenotheque 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

THE DOM PÉRIGNON STYLE IS DEEPLY DISTINCTIVE Paradox is a recurring feature of Dom Pérignon. The style is tense, rhythmic, vibrant, vigorous, precise, tactile, seamless, fresh yet mature, intense, complex, sensual. Dom Pérignon, so inviting yet so mysterious

A magnificent Champagne, one that is light, delicate, yet packed with character. It is beautifully balanced, with a bone-dry character, just softened by the toastiness that is developing. Expect this to age for many years.

1996 Dom Perignon Oenotheque is a champagne that has been released for a second time and it deserves a Oenotheque-label (ie "wine from the collection"). It indicates that Dom Perignon Vintage has reached its second peak during its maturation proces...

A fabulous vintage of Oenothèque that can withstand further bottle age but is already drinking magnificently.

Three 1996s from Dom Perignon are special. After having compared original releases and Œnotheque bottlings across a number of vintages going back to 1964, I am increasingly of the belief that the most enjoyable Dom Perignons are impeccably stored bottles of the original release. The 1996 Dom Perignon Œnotheque is pure, crystalline and noticeably dryer than the original release. This is all about minerality focus and drive.

This transforms the violent power of 1996 into a supple and succulent wine, holding the masculine tension of the vintage while yielding more delicate complexities: orange peel, cedar, ginger, tobacco. The wine’s refinement is extraordinary, the sumptuous richness girded into a gentle, sunny finish that lives in the memory after lingering for minutes on the lips. A youthful classic that shows no signs of its 16 years of age, this should live for decades.

This wine transcends the broadness of the 1995 vintage with detail and precision to its flavors. It’s massive and mature, a gorgeous older Champagne that shows no signs of reaching its peak. There’s something hypnotic in the limestone essence of the flavor, a pleasure that extends into layers of pale fruit purity, earthen strawberry, brioche and a ping of brightness. A day later, it has expanded into glory: Decant this if you open it now, or hold it for the right occasion sometime in the next ten years.
