Dolcetto d'Alba "Bricco Bastia" 2008
Claudio Conterno, whose role is based in the vineyard, and Guido Fantino, whose watchful eye and skilled hand makes the wines, started this benchmark estate in 1982. As two extremely talented individuals and members of the 'Langhe in', theirs has been the yardstick by which everyone else measures. This wine is from 4.5ha of land close to the Conterno Fantino winery. At just under 600m a.s.l. the vineyard is high for the Barolo region and average slope is consequently steep, at 25%. The wine itself has a mouthwatering acid structure and agreeably soft texture. It displays lovely cherry, berry and floral flavours, with an earthy, barnyard note. It is ready to drink now with pan-seared venison with rosemary and dried cherries, grilled lamb kebabs with cumin and cinnamon or grilled pork chops with classic barbecue sauce.
