Dobogo Furmint Tokaji 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Tokaj is a region bounded by the rivers Bodrog and Tisza in the north-eastern corner of Hungary, 120 miles from Budapest. It consists of 28 villages spread over the Tokaj hills at approximately 220 metres above sea level. The Dobogo estate is in the centre of Tokaj and was founded in 1869. It belongs to Izabella Zwack, the youngest member of the Zwack family better known in Hungary for their distillery on the banks of the Danube where Unicum, Hungary’s liqueur is produced. Grapes are sourced from two 30 year old vineyards of which the first is Betsek in Mád and the second Palota in Tállya. Both vineyards are planted with three of the permitted Tokaj grape varieties - Furmint, Harslevelu and Muscat Lunel. Yields are restricted using short spur pruning which ensure the vines do not yield more than 1kg of fruit per vine. Soils in this area are volcanic. The wine was partly fermented in oak and part in stainless steel tanks for 11 months, followed by a further four in bottle before release. This Tokaj is light lemon yellow in colour; it has perfumes of vanilla, pears and oranges with some lime and a flinty, mineral note. On the palate it is dry and full-bodied with a lovely richness through to the finish.
