Do Ferreiro Albariño 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

"The Do Ferreiro Albariño is sourced from a variety of vineyards Gerardo Mendez owns and farms throughout the Salnès. This valley’s proximity to the ocean and protection by mountain ranges has gained it the reputation for being the best area in Rías Baixas for viticulture. Complex aromas of salinity exotic fruits with wet earth/herbal tones. The palate is textured with excellent acidity. This winery, founded in 1973, is currently run by Gerardo Méndez. Gerardo owns 10 hectares, three of which are over 50 years old, and one of which is over 200 years old. The vineyards follow organic guidelines, avoiding the use of pesticides and non-organic fertilizers. In addition, Gerardo is devoted to the use of indigenous yeasts believing that through their usage the true qualities of his terruño can appear. Gerardo farms over 130 plots of Albariño, all located in the sub-zone of Salnès. This valley’s proximity to the ocean and protection by mountain ranges has gained it the reputation for being the best area in Rías Baixas for viticulture. The blend of Gerardo’s plots is what makes up the Do Ferreiro Albariño." -Importer

It's got that crisp burst of fruit, but there was a nutty, almost smoky burst on the mid to finish that was really wild. I still am trying to place the taste, but definitely not one I've had in any Albarinos to date.

This 5 hectare estate is one of the best in Rías Baixes. Winemaker Gerardo Mendez's vines are 50 years old at least, with one parcel of over 200 year old vines. The depth and minerality of this crisp, citric, and slightly petrol-y Albariño is stunning and truly places it a cut above the rest.
