A dark, almost black color in the glass. The nose is intense showing dark blackberry fruit with beef broth, plum sauce, savory herbs, mint. The palate is rich, full and intense with pumpkin pie spice, blackberries, raisin, tar and black licorice. The finish is beautifully long and full of ripe cherry fruit. This was my wine of the night.

Dark purple. Intensely floral nose offers an explosive bouquet of raspberry, blackberry, licorice and dried flowers. Extremely sweet and fresh, with lively red and dark berry flavors, nervy minerality and fine-grained tannins. A strikingly elegant midweight, with outstanding finishing cut and length

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin (18,000 bottle produced) is brilliant. Made from 100% Grenache from sandy and clay soils, the wine shows a stunning purity of licorice-infused black raspberry and black cherry notes, good, firm tannins, and stunning richness in an opulent, hedonistic style. The wine is a classic example of old vine Grenache and of Provence. This full-bodied, powerful wine, which has no hard edges, should drink beautifully for at least 15 or more years.

A true sleeper of the vintage, and a wine to buy by the case given its reasonable price is the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. This blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah and Mourvedre from 40-year-old vines was aged 80% in tank and the rest in small oak. Its dense purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of creme de cassis, kirsch, incense, spice box, and a touch of toast. Deep and multidimensional with huge glycerin, great acids, and sweet tannins, this massive 2007 is accessible now, and should last for 15-20+ years.

The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin's deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a phenomenal nose of black cherry liqueur, melted licorice, incense, asphalt, truffles, and a hint of earth. This dense, full-bodied effort is a candidate for wine of the vint... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Grenache wine from Rhone in France. 2006 Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin 750ml

I have had so many terrific examples of the Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin that it's hard to say the 2007 is the finest of all, but it is truly an amazing, old vine Grenache cuvee. Just under 20,000 bottles were produced from sand and clay soils. This inky/purple-colored wine reveals exquisite aromatic fireworks consisting of creme de cassis, black raspberries, licorice, incense, and spice, awesome fruit, major concentration, and a serious finish of close to a minute. For a wine of such enormous size, it is remarkable for its overall equilibrium and freshness.

Plush, with delicious purity to the crushed plum, macerated currant and warm fig flavors. Dark and racy through the finish, with a mouthwatering graphite edge. Superlong and precise. Drink now through 2019.

Winemaker's Notes:

This 100% Grenache vintage, located on the cold and late soil named Chapoin has been able to reach an optimum maturity thanks to ideal september climate conditions. The elevage showed flavors of red fruits and liquorice while keeping the soil-caracteristic smoothness et melted tannins. An elegant and powerful Grenache.
