Dingac Plavac 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Plavac, the most widely planted red grape in Croatia, is said to be a close genetic relative of Zinfandel. This quirky and fantastic example, however, tastes much more like a Cru Beaujolais (made from the light Gamay grape) than a big, extracted California Zin. Teeming with wild strawberry and sweet red raspberry fruit, this medium-bodied red gets a surprise jolt from firm, brawny tannins that provide good grip and give the wine a taut structural backbone.

Dingač is a wine region and also a winery on the Pelješac Peninsula on the Dalmatian Coast on the southern tip of Croatia. The red-only wines are produced from Plavac Mali (which translates to “little blue”), genetically the same grape as American Zinfandel, and can only be labeled as Dingač if grown in that specific vineyard area. The vineyard is on a steep hillside of the peninsula, with a dramatic drop off overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The mascot for the winery is the donkey, since for a long time it was impossible for vehicles to drive along the steep hillside. The wines are characterized by lush, dark fruit, rose aromatics and a warm, spicy finish.  Read less

This light bodied Plavac Mali is full of floral fruits like raspberries and blueberries that really show the variety's relationship to Zinfandel. The wine sees no oak and has lots of fresh acidity.
