Dievole Certosa di Pontignano Chianti Classico DOCG 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The Dievole estate is found in the small Etruscan village of Vagliagli on the rolling hills of Siena. The 411 hectares are all enclosed in one estate in the heart of Tuscany in the Chianti Classico area. Here you can find woods, olive groves and crop fields with of course the 86 hectares of Dievole’s vineyards, 300-420 metres above sea level. Traditional and antique vines grow aside new and fashionable vines, cultivated using the spurred cordon system, with a plant density from 4,500 to 6,800 vines per hectare in the Sessina and Campinovi vineyards. There is proof that the winery has been working since 1090, when two farmers went to the Commune to pay their rent for the land with six silver coins, three loaves of bread and two chickens. The first Chianti Classico Certosa di Pontignano came to life following an exciting new initiative and collaboration between the University of Siena and Dievole. The aim of the collaboration was to create a special policlonal blend using the ancient Sangiovese vines, once tended by the monks of the monastery, and the contemporary clones of the Dievole estate. An Agro-environmental park has been created within the walls of the 14th century Carthusian Monastery of Pontignano, which is tended to and cared for by the Dievole Estate. This 'Certosa di Pontignano' shows an intense ruby red colour. On the nose, a frutty and fresh perfume with cherry and cassis aromas. This wine is dry, with a good structure with tannins, smooth and full. Ideal with pasta with traditional sauces and grilled meat.
