What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

Rating: 96/100 - As reviewed by Vinfolio in Issue 106 This is the wine that started the California Pinot engine at Vinfolio in 2005. Since then no other Pinot Noir source has come close to the following generated by Dierberg fruit. Demand for the estate fruit and that bottled by Joe Davis of Arcadian is by far the leader among Vinfolio customers. The overall quality of the Dierberg Vineyard is on par with any other top Pinot producer in America. Shows dusty black cherry and black raspberry nose with subtle dried lavender (there is some whole cluster fermentation) and vanilla sprinkled sea salt. The palate is round and ripe leading to vibrant, mouth-coating read more...

Dierberg Vineyard is a name that instantly makes me take notice when someone mentions it. When Justin Willett told me this site was to be in his first release I made note of it and he was short-listed for my four day trip to Santa Barbara. The blocks used by Tyler are planted to Martini (clone 13), and Champagne (clone 31) Shows aromas of violet-laced chocolate, loamy cherry and smoke-kissed graphite. The palate is very focused showing a similar acid structure as Fiddlestix. The texture is velvet-like black cherry, violet and black raspberry.

An immense wine, yet one that retains great balance, nerve and elegance. Dark raspberry and wild blackberry notes are accented by the characteristic “sauvage” note of the special terroir. Flavors lean towards the fresh raspberry end of the spectrum, with sexy mocha and complex forest floor nuances.

#49 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2008 In keeping with the traditional Dierberg style, the 2005 Pinot Noir is an immense wine, yet one that retains great balance, nerve and elegance. Dark raspberry and wild blackberry notes are accented by the characteristic sauvage note of our special terroir. Flavors lean towards the fresh raspberry end of the spectrum, with sexy mocha and complex forest floor nuances. As always, our Dierberg Pinot Noir features surprising grip and structure for such a ripe wine. Enjoy it now for its wild fruit and explosiveness or cellar for several years tobring out the subtle read more...

On the basis of the Spectator review I tried this wine at Va de Vi bistro in Walnut Creek CA a few weeks ago. Bingo! I had a second glass. This is the best California pinot I ever tasted (though I've been mostly a cab drinker). Smooth, well-balanced, relatively complex are characteristics I remember. I will definitely try more Dierberg pinots.
