Dierberg Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

93 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): Dierberg's 2012 Chardonnay is gorgeous. Lemon oil, tropical fruit and butter are all tempered by the cool microclimate here. The flavors remain bright, focused and nuanced in a crystalline Chardonnay that stands out for its precision. A hint of sweetness from the oak adds complexity, but overall, the 2012 is a wine built on energy. Drink: 2014-2020. (Jul 2014)

With the 2009 scoring 93 points with the Wine Advocate all signs point to the 2010 scoring just as well if not better.

Racy on the palate, this is a vintage full of fresh, mineral energy- hints of sea shell and river stones that dovetail into a long, mouthwatering finish. Perhaps our most precise expression of our Santa Maria vineyard yet, we expect this vivacious Chardonnay to age beautifully

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. If a little withdrawn and taking its time to unfold in the nose, this juicy, nicely filled effort is long on fresh, green apple fruit, and it picks up a bit of extra richness from a deftly placed bit of sweet oak. Rounded in feel and then showing a slight acidy lift at the finish, it is a thoroughly tasty and easy-to-drink wine at the moment but also one that might well improve over the next couple of years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Chardonnays from the Dierberg Vineyard are characterized by their strong impression of acidity and by a finish that lingers for nearly a minute on the palate. They are among the rare Californian Chardonnays that will gracefully improve with age for 5 years or more. Immediate impressions of lemon curd and orange blossom are followed by aromas of hazelnut allspice and meyer lemon. On the palate the wine is sleek and refined with a lithe texture and mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of citrus-lemon rind tangelo and lemongrass-echo the aromatic impressions of this Chardonnay creating seamless wine at once powerful and impeccably balanced. Enjoy this wine with subtly flavored hard cheeses to accentuate its freshness and subtle nutty impressions or cellar for 2 to 3 years and savor with heartier seafood and pork dishes.
