Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

While not terribly aromatic, this does show a nice balance of oak-derived spice notes, slightly herbal and earth-framed black raspberry and cassis notes, and an intriguing floral element. Nicely scaled, this has a rich edge but is still medium-bodied with lively acidity and soft, velvety tannins. There’s a nice core of fleshy blackberry fruit along with a little meaty edge that drives to a slightly drying, modest finish. This is a really finely textured wine, with a nice balance of flavor that doesn’t hit you over the head and ends with some refreshing structure. 87pts

Established in 1997, Diamond Creek Estate is an award winning family owned and operated vineyard and olive grove. Diamond Creek Estate is situated on the northern slopes of Mittagong, around 120 kms south of Sydney, in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales. The property for many years was dairy country, enjoys rich basalt soil, northern sun and although at an altitude of 680 metres, it has an unique topography, which leaves it relatively immune from frost. This creates an ideal microclimate for cultivating premium quality, cool climate wine grapes and the finest olives for extra virgin olive oil. The vineyard occupies around 15 acres and a similar area is dedicated to olive trees. The vines are subject to intensive management for improvement, hand pruned and leaf-plucked as required. They are personally tended, cropped for optimised yields to produce premium quality cool climate wine grapes. Diamond Creek Estate Wines are produced only from estate grown grapes. The region, although the newest recognized geographical indication, is fast being acknowledged as a premium cool climate area and this is consistent with our objective to produce first class wines that will compete with any in Australia and overseas. From what is widely regarded as a crappy vintage comes this surprisingly appealing wine that speaks more of Diamond creek than the crappy vintage. Lightly gamy on the nose with some nice iron tones and deeply spicy earth tones that translate to a lean, focused palate presence with lots of leathery tones but nice dark, dried cherry fruit and tea notes as well. Neither a power house nor a sweetly fruited wine but rather a wine built on Bordelais sensibilities. 89pts

Very rich and flavorful with nice fruit and tannins. This is one of my go-to wines that I always have a few bottles in the cellar. Very consistently excellent from vintage to vintage. Great with grilled beef. Over the last few years the price on this has dropped from around $20 to under $13 at some of the big retailers, making it a really good bargain.

Dark, rich purple color. Jammy nose with hints of blackberry and currant. Medium to heavy bodies with a nice hotness behind it. Interesting blend of varieties giving it the tannins and sternness of Cabernet and Merlot with the spice that you would get from the Malbec variety. Very meaty and a wonderfully thick mouth feel. Would be nicely paired with red meat. The finish lingers on and makes you want the next sip. I have always liked Clarets. As far as I know they always contain the same 5 grape varieties but the percentage it was makes the wine. So I thought I would just mention the varieties and the percentages in this vintage. Great wine for the price! 79% Cabernet Sauvignon 9% Petit Verdot 7% Merlot, 3% Malbec 2% Cabernet Franc

WINEMAKER'S NOTES2009 was an excellent vintage that featured only light spring rain, warm summer weather and no abrupt climate changes at season's end. This allowed us to be highly selective during harvest, choosing the very best fruit only when completely ripe. The result of these amazing conditions is a perfectly balanced and elegantly textured wine with supple tannins, rich fruit concentration and alluring notes of spice and wood. It is a lovely accompaniment to filet mignon topped with bleu cheese, grilled lamb chops or truffle buttered potatoes. - WineryTASTING PROFILEAppearance: MagentaAromas: Cherries, currants, and aniseFlavors: Blackberries, plums, dark chocolate and toasted oakAppellation: CaliforniaBlend: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet FrancAlcohol: 13.5%Total Acid: .58pH: 3.73Barrel Regimen: 15 months in French oakReleased: January 2011

Claret is the old British term for the wines of Bordeaux. This wine, the first such from Francis Ford Coppolarsquo;s Sonoma County winery, is a good buy. Itrsquo;s a bit rustic, but offers smooth flavors of blackberries, currants and chocolate.

The cornerstone of Coppolarsquo;s Diamond Collection, this Cabernet-based blend is hearty and full-flavored, but very soft on the palate. Deep black fruit and spice notes abound, making this a great easy-drinking red for burgers, pulled pork or goulash.

This is young Cabernet, dark purple in color, with the aroma dominated by the smoke and vanilla of fine oak. Itrsquo;s as rich as blackberry pie, juicy and fat, yet nicely dry. Balanced, with fine tannins, this is a nice glass of red wine.

Offers broad aromas of sandalwood, spice, and red currants followed by layers of engaging black currant, berry, and dark chocolate flavors. Hints of sweet vanilla framed by luxurious, elegant tannins highlight the winersquo;s lengthy finish.
