Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Gravelly Meadow 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

98 points James Suckling: The aromas to this wine are phenomenal with blueberry and blackberry. It is so perfumed and floral with violets, lilacs and roses. Full body, firm tannins and super silky tannins. Yet cool and racy. Minerally with stone, as it should be. Classic Diamond Creek style. Better in 2020 but a joy to taste. 430 cases made. (5/3/16)

Established in 1997, Diamond Creek Estate is an award winning family owned and operated vineyard and olive grove. Diamond Creek Estate is situated on the northern slopes of Mittagong, around 120 kms south of Sydney, in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales. The property for many years was dairy country, enjoys rich basalt soil, northern sun and although at an altitude of 680 metres, it has an unique topography, which leaves it relatively immune from frost. This creates an ideal microclimate for cultivating premium quality, cool climate wine grapes and the finest olives for extra virgin olive oil. The vineyard occupies around 15 acres and a similar area is dedicated to olive trees. The vines are subject to intensive management for improvement, hand pruned and leaf-plucked as required. They are personally tended, cropped for optimised yields to produce premium quality cool climate wine grapes. Diamond Creek Estate Wines are produced only from estate grown grapes. The region, although the newest recognized geographical indication, is fast being acknowledged as a premium cool climate area and this is consistent with our objective to produce first class wines that will compete with any in Australia and overseas. Diamond Creek is one of the most iconic names in Napa Valley wines. In 1968 Al Brounstein discovered that Diamond Mountain was an extraordinarily good place to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. He defined three vineyard locations by their soil and topography and started producing single vineyard Cabs that absolutely blew everyone's mind. His first release was 41 years ago and the wines are still produced in extremely limited quantities that are snapped up by anyone who can get their hands on them. Gravelly Meadow is a five acre vineyard and it's the second coolest micro-climate. Originally a pre-historic river bed, this stony, gravelly soil drains rapidly and the vines struggle for moisture. Gravelly Meadow is also the lowest yielding vineyard. The wines are described as "earthy, cedary, jammy and ripe blackberry with a spicy expansive finish." James Suckling scored just this 2013 98 points saying "The aromas to this wine are phenomenal with blueberry and blackberry. It is so perfumed and floral with violets, lilacs and roses. Full body, firm tannins and super silky tannins. Yet cool and racy. Minerally with stone, as it should be. Classic Diamond Creek style. Better in 2020 but a joy to taste." Extremely Limited!!

In 1968 Al Brounstein discovered that Diamond Mountain was an extraordinarily good place to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. He defined three vineyard locations by their soil and topography and started producing single vineyard Cabs that absolutely blew everyone's mind. His first release was 40 years ago and the wines are still produced in extremely limited quantities that are snapped up by anyone who can get their hands on them. This 2012 is their Fortieth Anniversary release and a special commemorative label adorns each bottle. Gravelly Meadow is a five acre vineyard and it's the second coolest micro-climate. Originally a pre-historic river bed, this stony, gravelly soil drains rapidly and the vines struggle for moisture. Gravelly Meadow is also the lowest yielding vineyard. The wines are described as "earthy, cedary, jammy and ripe blackberry with a spicy expansive finish." Master of Wine Jeannie Cho Lee on her Asian Palate website scored this 94 points saying "Exuberant and expressive with dark berry, cedar and sweet spices. Opulent and rich in the mid-palate. Beautiful flavor expression that ranges from dark wood to blackberry and spices. There is an earthiness here, which is found in all Diamond Creek wines. Only free-run juice was used." James Suckling just scored this 97 points saying "Aromas of dark fruits such as black currants as well as chili spices. Maybe some tar too. It’s full-bodied with wonderful depth and intensity. This starts slowly and grabs your attention. Voluptuous fruit style. Better in 2020."

Deep red. Overextracted, herbaceous nose of bitter cherry, leather and mint. Aggressively green menthol and herbal flavors overwhelm the wine limited fruit. Rustic, coarse and tough. 77 points Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1987 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow 750ml
