Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain Gravelly Meadow 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This really evolved well from it's initial showing of rusty mineral, faded floral and soft black olive tones to a fresh, sweet nose of black currant, cigar box and briary notes with a lovely accent of eucalyptus. In the mouth his remained lean but was wonderfully fresh with a clean, brisk feel and fine focus. Green herb and green tobacco notes help define the zesty red currant fruits. 12.5% alcohol and brilliant! This perfectly exhibits why I prefer these older California Cabernet to Bordeaux, ignoring for the moment the crazy price differential. This is perhaps a bit simple but it remains fresh, brilliantly balanced, and simply a joy to drink. 2009-2015 94pts.

Established in 1997, Diamond Creek Estate is an award winning family owned and operated vineyard and olive grove. Diamond Creek Estate is situated on the northern slopes of Mittagong, around 120 kms south of Sydney, in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales. The property for many years was dairy country, enjoys rich basalt soil, northern sun and although at an altitude of 680 metres, it has an unique topography, which leaves it relatively immune from frost. This creates an ideal microclimate for cultivating premium quality, cool climate wine grapes and the finest olives for extra virgin olive oil. The vineyard occupies around 15 acres and a similar area is dedicated to olive trees. The vines are subject to intensive management for improvement, hand pruned and leaf-plucked as required. They are personally tended, cropped for optimised yields to produce premium quality cool climate wine grapes. Diamond Creek Estate Wines are produced only from estate grown grapes. The region, although the newest recognized geographical indication, is fast being acknowledged as a premium cool climate area and this is consistent with our objective to produce first class wines that will compete with any in Australia and overseas. Drank in 2007 after 1 hour of decanting. Very Funky Barnyard nose, but in the mouth tasted like mature classed Bordeaux: earth, leather, grilled mushroom, cassis. Really nice wine

Probably the most expensive wines I'll ever have. It was definitely worth the other guy's money. :)

Our second coolest microclimate is our five-acre Gravelly Meadow vineyard. Originally a prehistoric river bed, this stony, gravelly soil drains rapidly and the vines struggle for moisture.Gravelly Meadow is our lowest yielding vineyard. The wines

Wine & Spirits ReviewGravelly Meadow offers full-on power in 2003, its supple, succulent texture packing truffles and earthiness into its flavor. Its generous dark fruit and bittersweet chocolate tannin balances the alcohol richness. Air lengthens the flavors, bringing out the elegance and complexity in the wine-an indication of the wine's potential development over the next two decades.

An intense, ruggedly tannic style that packs in distinctive earthy currant, blackberry, cedar and wild berry flavors before the tannins wrap it up tightly. Needs cellaring... Wine Spectator. The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow's old mushroom and stinky saddle leather characteristics obliterate Cabernet's black currant, cedary, spice box notes. The finish reveals hard, astringent tannin, suggesting the wine will dry out ... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Wine Spectator ReviewElegant but quite complete, with ripe cherry, sage, spice and berry flavors. Youthful, long and vibrant. Best from 2002 through 2010.

Remarkably elegant, complex, ripe and concentrated, with a sweet plum and cherry accent to the spicy anise, cedar and light oak shadings. With its relatively mild tannins it's tempting now, but worthy of cellaring into 2000.

Earthy and complex - typical of this vineyard - with layers of clay, spice, berry and cherry; long and lingering on the finish. Needs time. Best from 2002.
