Di Arie Zinfandel Shenandoah Valley 2006
The Zinfandel grapes used in this wine came part from Frank Gunthers Vineyard and part from our Estate Vineyard. Gunthers Vineyard, which is about 41 years old, is one of the best Zinfandel vineyards in this valley. Our Estate Vineyard was planted in 2002 with a Duprat clone of Zinfandel that is not common in this region. The prominent clone of Zinfandel in the Foothills is the Deaver clone. This is the first year that our vineyard has produced quality grapes to be worthy of this wine. This wine was made in our patented Submerged Cap Fermentation Tank that is capable of fully extracting the flavor, color and mouthfeel components present in the grapes. The wine was then aged in predominantly French oak barrels for 14 months.This is an exciting Zinfandel that is very varietal in character. It has aromas of dark berries and wild herbs with nuances of black pepper. On the palate you discover layers of flavors starting with fresh blackberry and ending with wild strawberry. The finish is long and lasting with dark fruit, dark chocolate and black pepper. This is a wine that fills your mouth in a gentle way.

Dark, but not opaque, and clear in the glass. Fairly big nose--woody and fruity (typical Zinfandel berries and cherries) and a tad astringent. Initial mouth sensation is smoothness, then, some berries and cherries--not a lot-- and some mint, then some tannic dryness around the edge of the tongue. Kind of a green wood sensation on the finish which then transitions back to the cherry hint. This is the third di Arie wine that I've had in the last few months and every one of them has been been very good. This winery deserves more attention than it is getting. US16.99 at Total WIne
