Descendientes de J. Palacios Bierzo 'Petalos' 2017
Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:
A blend of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz A bit sweet on the nose and showing a bit of reduction underneath the herb, briar flecked blackberry fruit, and dry soil aromas. Air cleans things up nicely revealing some blueberry fruit and a little brushy, dried herb, chaparral-like tone. Thi is super fresh in the mouth and packed with berry fruit that is taut and tight and a little youthfully harsh with high acid and angular little tannins in the mouth. There is so much fresh fruit here that you can ignore the edginess and appreciate this for what it is a tense, fruity, mouth-cleansing wine with good length. 87pts

Add your reviewSuch a pretty wine, as the name suggests. A very elegant Bierzo (many are more rustic and concentrated). Dark plums and blueberries are balanced with minerals and purple flower aromas. Nice, long, giving finish. Tastes way more expensive than it is. Very versatile.

This 100% Mencia wine consistently delivers medium-bodied black raspberry and blueberry flavors, while showing floral notes and spice that remind me of Fleurie in Beaujolais, or a Chinon from the Loire. A wine that shows another side of Spanish wine, i.e. not Tempranillo or Garnacha.

At the end of the day, if I really have to recommend a wine from this collection, the one I’d buy for my cellar, it will be the 2011 Petalos del Bierzo. It is 95% Mencia mixed in the field with 3% of white grapes and the rest Alicante Bouschet and other reds, fermented after de-stemming in open wood and inox vats and aged ten months in French barrels, of which 20% are new. Eighty percent of the grapes are grown on slate in the Corullon vineyards, with different altitudes and orientations, and the remaining 20% come from clay soils from the valley. It all adds to the complexity of the wine. The wine is very aromatic and flowery (violets), almost heady, with clear notes of blueberries and licorice. The oak is perfectly integrated, almost imperceptible, save for a touch of spices and a lactic hint denoting a very young wine. It has a medium body, with a thick silky texture, is very tasty, with some acidic strawberry flavors. This is one of my go-to wines at restaurant lists, as it offers very good value for money and is widely available in Spain (and elsewhere, I hope!), as 320,000 bottles were produced. This could very well be the best Petalos produced to date. Drink now through 2019.

Bierzo, SpainDescendientes de J. Palacios Petalos is a gorgeous red wine gem from the Bierzo region, perched in the northwest corner of Spain. The legend of Spanish winemaker Alvaro Palacios continues to grow! His latest project features another rising star--the obscure Menca grape. Here ancient Menca vineyards emerge from the steepest of hillsides, their roots deeply set into unique, mineral-laden soils. Under the skilled hands of Palacios and his cousin, Ricardo Perez Palacios, the forgotten black grape (believed by some to be a cousin of Cabernet Franc) has achieved new heights. The 60- to 100-year-old vines yield less than one ton per acre, resulting in a most concentrated, unique expression of this variety and of the Bierzo terroir. Ricardo Perez implements organic and biodynamic practices. In reviewing this 2009 vintage of Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos, the world's leading wine critics are in agreement: this wine is a winner! Wine Spectator rated it 91 points and, for the second year in a row, named it among its Top 100 Wines of 2012, ranking it #57. Josh Raynolds for Steve Tanzer also scored it 91 points. Get it while you can!Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos is dark purple-red in color with full body and bright acidity. The nose offers fragrant aromas of blackberries, black cherries, licorice, spice and violets. The palate is rich and velvety with dark berries, mineral notes and well integrated oak. Aged for a few weeks in new French oak barriques followed by 6-10 months in 2nd and 3rd passage barrels. The finish is long and pleasing.Enjoy Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos with steak, roast pork, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.

This Primitivo wine is a beautiful deep ruby color, intense, with rich plummy aromas. It is dry, soft, and rich with excellent balance, medium body ripe fruit flavors and a long finish with soft tannins. A wonderful compliment when served with roasted red meats, wild game, and spicy cheeses. Serve at room temperature. - Winery

Intense aroma of young fresh fruit like cherry and blackberry. Dark in color, it also shows some spicy notes along with some wood. Well structured in the mouth it has excellent acidity and firm tannins. The final is long, seductive and complex. It's a wine that we can enjoy from now but it will also age a few years very well.

Purpur Farbe. In der Nase intensive fruchtige und blumige Aromen. In der Nase mineralisch, mit viel Frucht, Würzigkeit, leicht rauchige Noten sowie blumig. Ein charaktervoller Wein mit einem fruchtig, frischen Finale.
