This is Descendientesrsquo; so-called starter Bierzo, but it rises above the tried and true value zone to exhibit mineral, crushed violet petals, graham cracker and pure dark-fruit aromas. The palate is smooth and plush, with lush black-fruit flavors, easygoing tannins and some creamy length. Itrsquo;s not as vivid as the 2005, but itrsquo;s still mighty impressive.

Bierzo, SpainDescendientes de J. Palacios Petalos is a gorgeous red wine gem from the Bierzo region, perched in the northwest corner of Spain. The legend of Spanish winemaker Alvaro Palacios continues to grow! His latest project features another rising star--the obscure Menca grape. Here ancient Menca vineyards emerge from the steepest of hillsides, their roots deeply set into unique, mineral-laden soils. Under the skilled hands of Palacios and his cousin, Ricardo Perez Palacios, the forgotten black grape (believed by some to be a cousin of Cabernet Franc) has achieved new heights. The 60- to 100-year-old vines yield less than one ton per acre, resulting in a most concentrated, unique expression of this variety and of the Bierzo terroir. Ricardo Perez implements organic and biodynamic practices. In reviewing this 2009 vintage of Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos, the world's leading wine critics are in agreement: this wine is a winner! Wine Spectator rated it 93 points and named it among its Top 100 Wines of 2011, ranking it #26. Josh Raynolds for Steve Tanzer scored it 91 points and Jay Miller for Robert Parker 90 points. Get it while you can!Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos is dark purple-red in color with full body and bright acidity. The nose offers fragrant aromas of blackberries, black cherries, licorice, spice and violets. The palate is rich and velvety with dark berries, mineral notes and well integrated oak. Aged for a few weeks in new French oak barriques followed by 6-10 months in 2nd and 3rd passage barrels. The finish is long and pleasing.Enjoy Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos with steak, roast pork, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.

The new releases (all 100% Mencia) include the entry-level 2009 Petalos del Bierzo sourced mainly from leased vineyards with vine age ranging from 40–90 years. It was aged for a few weeks in new French barriques followed by 6–10 months in seasoned barrels. It shows lovely density and purity in an up-front style. Dark black cherries, violets, and Asian spices perch on a medium-bodied frame with well integrated oak and an elegant personality. With excellent volume and length, it is a classy introduction to what can be achieved in the DO of Bierzo.

This sinuous red delivers both intensity and elegance, with smoky oak notes floating around boysenberry, mineral and licorice flavors. The tannins are well-integrated and give way to a perfumed finish. Drink now through 2015.

Lurid purple. Bright, assertively perfumed aromas of blackberry, cherry, licorice and violet. Deep and spicy, offering mineral-driven dark berry flavors that show excellent clarity and a suave floral quality. Tangy acidity adds lift and cut to a long, sappy finish. This wine's blend of richness and energy is intriguing.

The 2006 Petalos del Bierzo is purple-colored with a fragrant nose of violets, lavender, mulberry, and blueberry. Ripe, supple, and sweetly fruited, it will evolve for 2ndash;3 years and drink well through 2015.
