Derbès Chardonnay Russian River Valley 2003

Member Review by jathompson:

Delicious. This wine proves that the new world, especially California, can produce complex, subtle, Old World quality whites. Winemaker Cecile Lemerle-Derbes, Champagne raised, presents a wine drinking very well at 5 years, emulating Mersault qualities: smokey, creamy, with a finish that goes on and on. It is reminiscent of homemade apple pie filling with the good structure of baked apple and cinnamon, resting on faint citrus, mostly lemon. In a few years, it will be speaking bacon straight out. Now, however, there is plenty of flinty minerality that makes you think of young Chablis. An absolute delight to drink, challenging and engaging at every sip.
