Deloach Vineyards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2015

Member Review by shsim:

This stop at DeLoach was part of a Russian River tasting trip! Decent nose with the typical cabbage vegetal smell as usual for a Pinot. Simple, fruity and lightly spiced, I like that it had a certain nut roastiness to it like roasted hazelnuts! DeLoach Vineyards pioneered Pinot Noir wine growing in the Russian River Valley when Cecil DeLoach, a firefighter from San Francisco with a passion for winemaking, first planted the grape in 1973. In 2003, DeLoach Vineyards was purchased by the Boisset Family from Burgundy, France, when Jean-Charles Boisset fell in love with the Russian River Valley on his first visit to the area, immediately recognizing the similarities between Sonoma County and Burgundy: each boast a confluence of river, mountains, and soil that is perfect for growing world-class Pinot Noir. A recognized authority on biodynamic, organic, and sustainable winemaking, the Boisset Family had been using these eco-friendly practices in their estate vineyards in Burgundy and understood the positive effects they had on the health of the land and the quality of the wine. In 2004 the family brought that vision here to DeLoach Vineyards. Showing our dedication to the environment, we tore up award-winning, highly-lauded vineyards after the 2004 vintage and replanted with cover crops designed to revitalize the soil. New vines were planted in 2006, and the first vintage grown with biodynamic farming techniques will be the eagerly-awaited 2010 vintage. In the meantime, we continue to produce world-class wine by partnering with winegrowers who are equally dedicated to and passionate about eco-friendly farming practices and the production of high-quality wines of distinction. At DeLoach Vineyards, we focus on small-lot winemaking, giving exceptional care and attention to our Russian River Valley, O.F.S. and Vineyard Designate wines. Our passion is Pinot Noir - the noble variety of Burgundy that demands a delicate, labor-intensive process to showcase the exceptional terroir and complexity of the Russian River Valley and beyond. The diligence required to produce truly original, terroir-driven Pinot Noir is given to each wine that we craft. In keeping with our Burgundian Heritage, we use French open-top wood fermentors for all of our Russian River Valley, O.F.S, and Vineyard Designate Pinot Noirs, as well as our old-vine Zinfandel. We also practice hand punch-downs, known as pigeage -- another Burgundian winemaking tradition. Tasting Room Open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Groups with more than ten guests are accepted by appointment. Read less

Raspberry and black cherry fruit. Nice and ripe, though not jammy.

Fruity apple, blueberry, and brandy nose with balanced oak and vanilla, and a bit of ash. The mouth is strongly acidic in a way that gives it minerality, it almost tastes salty. The finish is buttery.

Spicy and brambly aromas with some cinnamon and cherries. An earthy pinot with a touch of cherry cobbler, a hint of sweetness and medicine and just a touch of cream and cocoa on the finish.

Light earthy rustic cola nose. Darker than many pinots I've had. Raspberry dominates in the mouth with mellow acidity and a slight rubberiness toward the back end. Sweet and chalky finish with the faintest bit of tea leaves. A nice pinot.

De Loach Vineyards gained a reputation through the last three decades for producing first class Pinots from their winery in the Russian River Valley. Today, someone who knows a thing or two about Pinot Noir, dynamic Burgundy producer Jean-Charles Boisset leads the charge, having purchased the estate in 2003. Since then has upgraded throughout the estate and even replanted many of the vineyards. This is a signature wine for the estate. Fruit was selected from prime vineyards in the Russian River Valley, all hand-harvested. The wine is crafted using traditional Burgundian techniques. The grapes were hand-sorted then fermented in small vats with all punch-downs done by hand. It was aged for 11 months in 60 gallon French oak barrels, 16% new, to create a complex, multi-layered Pinot Noir. Wine & Spirits Magazine named the 2013 a "Best Buy" scoring it 93 points and saying "For his 2013 appellation wine, winemaker Brian Maloney selected fruit from four vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley, including Heintz at the cool western edge of Green Valley and Becnel in the warmer hills along Westside Road. His gentle treatment of the fruit and use of mostly older barrels allows quiet, savory aromas of forest mushrooms and sandalwood to lead the way. The flavors slowly build toward a pure, rosy, red-fruited glow that's mouthwatering and gentle, yet utterly persuasive. The wine also happens to be a steal - and it would be delicious with sauteed mushrooms."

The OFS Pinot Noir typifies a quintessential Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. Generous aromas of blackberry and raspberry lift out of the glass. The aromas unfold to fresh berries mingling with rose petals towards the front of the palate, followed by undertones of cola, leather, and black tea in the mid to back palate. This seductively layered wine is perfectly balanced with its fine acids and medium-bodied soft tannins, resulting in a wine that is approachable upon release as well as a wine that will continue to develop beautiful nuances with age. Enjoy with roasted pork tenderloin with fingerling potatoes or grilled rack of lamb with honey mustard glaze. - Winery ** SOLD OUT **

De Loach Our Finest Selection (O.F.S.) Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2008 750ML

Our 2008 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir expresses many classic traits associated with this fine varietal. Luscious aromas of cherry pie, chocolate and vanilla burst from the glass and are enhanced by notes of anise and a brown spice bordering on molasses. The palate is bright and lifted, with flavors of fresh Santa Rosa plums and sun-dried cranberries with a touch of cola and leafy green herbs. Clean and smooth, this easy-drinking wine has a medium body and very fine-grained, silky tannins that spread beautifully across the palate
