Delille Cellars D2 2011

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

Looking at the estate’s next round of Bordeaux blend releases, which were tasted at the winery and mostly from barrel (the 2010 Grand Ciel Cabernet Sauvignon was tasted from bottle), the 2011 D2 is a Merlot-dominated blend with smaller components of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Consisting of declassified lots, it is fleshy, full and rich, with an easygoing, textured mouthfeel and quality aromas of wild herbs, graphite, mineral and assorted dark fruits. It will most likely be an outstanding drink and have 6–7 years or more of longevity. Drink 2014–2020.

DeLILLE CELLARS is a small winery located in Woodinville, Washington and was originally co-founded in 1992 by Greg Lill, Jay Soloff, Chris Upchurch and Charles Lill (now his daughter Pat Lill Jorgenson is shareholder/partner). Simply stated, our goal is to make the very best handcrafted, old-world style red and white wine made in the State of Washington. We are a family and independently owned winery with an uncompromising philosophy about the quality of what will be in your bottle of wine. DeLILLE CELLARS currently produces five Bordeaux-styled wines: Grand Ciel, Chaleur Estate Red, D2, Harrison Hill, and Chaleur Estate Blanc. Also produced are the Doyenne wines, which include a classic northern Rhône-style Syrah - awarded as one of the great 15 Syrahs of the world; a Roussanne; Métier a Southern Rhône-styled red wine; Métier Blanc, a Provençe-style white, Aix, a Provençe-style red, and our latest addition, a Provençe/Bandol-style Rosé. DeLille’s ‘second’ wine bests a lot of other wineries’ firsts this vintage. This blend includes merlot (56 percent) and cabernet sauvignon (36 percent) with franc and petit verdot. It takes on a savory, cedary accent from oak, enough to leave an impression without intruding on the sleek cherry-scented fruit. The vibrant red-fruit flavors are tethered to a suave texture with the kind of natural elegance that brings to mind a Right Bank Bordeaux in a generous vintage. For a well-aged steak.

A smoking effort, the 2011 D2 checks in as a blend of 56% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and the balance Petit Verdot. It offers gorgeous black cherry, black currants, tobacco leaf and hints of chocolate to go with a full-bodied, rich, textured and seamless profile on the palate. Showing both richness and elegance, with building fine tannin, it’s a rock-star Bordeaux blend that will have 10 to 15 years of longevity.

A bit more than half Merlot, this Bordeaux-style blend is balanced and complex. Layers of flower, fruit and earth unfold gracefully. There are suggestions of clean mushroom as well, with a smooth, seamless mouthfeel and modest length.
