Delas Frères Red Rhone Blend Côtes du Rhône Saint-Esprit 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Robert Parker. The amazing 2007 Cotes du Rhone St.-Esprit (75% Syrah and 25% Grenache) reveals a northern Rhone orientation but it is loaded with spice and black fruits and displays a beautiful opulent texture as well as a gorgeous finish with impressive purity.

It has become quite commonplace to remind everyone that the best wines are more the result of work in the vineyards than of the winemaker's talents, however impressive these may be. And those who work in the winery and cellars have humbly gone along with that. But 2008 has underscored the necessity for true balance and complementarity between vineyard and cellar work. The growing season was not an easy one this year. Exceptionally high rainfall (650 mm up to the end of August) made for a lot of work in the vineyards, and imposed some limits on what we could expect. Fungal diseases that we thought were now limited to less favourable climates than the northern Rhône valley returned to our hillsides, locally causing considerable losses in crop. This also slowed down the maturation process, and, in some parts of the DELAS FRERES estate, veraison of grapes only completed around August 20th. This was the case, for example, in plots like Combe Clos, part of Domaine des Grands Chemins, the firm's latest acquisition. The first week of September will be remembered by all. A series of sudden, violent storms caused considerable damage, with very heavy rainfall (350 mm in the week). About 1500 cubic metres of soil were washed off the Hermitage hill, and numerous retaining terrace walls crumbled on our Domaine des Tourettes. The grapes were thouroughly washed, but luckily were not damaged as there was no hail and the berries did not burst. The fear of more storms with heavy rain motivated some growers to harvest at minimal levels of potential alcohol. This is where the winemaker had to step in firmly in order to calm things down and encourage the growers who bring in the grapes to wait. The fact of waiting longer for harvest, coupled with severe sorting of grapes, further reduced yields that were already low. The quantities brought in were below 25 hectolitres per hectare in our Hermitage estate Domaine des Tourettes, and 32 hectolitres per hectare at our Domaine des Grands Chemins, producing Crozes Hermitage red. Winemaking techniques can correct a certain number of deficiencies in the raw material, but there is no way of compensating for insufficient maturity. So harvest was very late this year. The first grapes (for white Crozes Hermitage) were picked on September 17th, and the last (for Cornas, and the Saint-Pierre vineyard) went into the tanks on October 11th. Taking such risks enabled DELAS FRERES to obtain good natural levels of alcohol, around 12.5°. This will facilitate winemaking choices and the production of wines that show good balance and remain true to their origins. Inevitably, maturity levels reached their highest in the oldest vines of Domaine des Tourettes, on the part of the hillside called « Bessard ». Here our syrah grapes produced potential alcohol levels of over 13°. Wine-making and ageing will be aimed at preserving as much fruit flavours as possible, as well as encouraging suavity in the texture of the wines. Use of oak will be even more sparing than usual. It is a well-balanced, well-made wine. It is towards the lighter side than medium and has a very abrupt finish that is a bit on the acidic side. The problem I have with this wine is that it doesn't compare well with a good Syrah nor does it compare well with a good Grenache. It is a new world wine and so might appeal more to American tastes than people used to more traditional Cotes-du-Rhones.

Tasty southern French wine bordering on the complex with deep, tasty dark fruit. On non-decanted bottle, tight nose with hints of tar and fresh wet stone. In the mouth pleasantly bitter deep dry blackberry, cassis with hints of fig, earth, and pepper. Not sour. Finishes with hint of machine or nut oil and wood and leather. Medium body, medium plus acid, medium plus drying tannins.

Color ruby-red, nose has mild bubblegum and mild sweet ripe red fruit. On the attack tart raspberry, followed by light to medium body, moderate acid, and lighter tannins. Short finish with lingering tart fruit and nut flavor.

This is realy deep purple. The first night this bottle was open the tannins and acidity overwhelmed the other flavors in this wine. On the second night the wine had opened up and was showing nice bright cherry and blackberry. This is a great bottle for the price.

Black berries and cherries integrated with the right amount of spice along with a bit of minerally earth. It seemed a bit closed so it could benefit from two or three more years in the bottle. This wine is a great value and I intend to drink a lot more of it

The Cotes-du-Rhone Saint Esprit is made from a blend of Syrah and Grenache grapes, which come from a small village in the Ardeche region. The vineyard's southern exposure on steep granite hillsides provides the best growing conditions for the vines. Winemaker Notes The Cotes-du-Rhone is made with whole grape clusters that are vinified using traditional methods. The crop is de-stemmed and the grapes are placed in a vat where they are gently pressed and pumped for two days. The juice is then fermented for three weeks in open stainless-steel tanks. The tanks are thermo-controlled at 64 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Tasting Notes The Cuvee Saint-Esprit shows the strength and pepper taste typical of the Syrah grape. The color is deep garnet red and has intense red berry aromas. It is an exceptional full-bodied wine with fine tannins.

The Ctes-du-Ventoux comes from a blend of wines from the Apt commune in the heart of the Cote du-Ventoux appellations. The grapes are Grenache (80%) and Syrah (20%). The color is a dark ruby red. There is a dominace of red berries with a combination of power and freshness that carries over onto the palate.
