Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette 2003
Medium ruby. Superripe aromas of blackberry liqueur and spearmint; faintly medicinal. Superripe, fat and sweet; a bit porty and undifferentiated despite possessing adequate acidity. But undeniably rich, chocolatey and deep, with lurking minerality.. Finishes very long, with huge, powerful tannins
Editorial Reviews for Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette
Wow this is intense right from the get go with well integrated wood spice backing up deep, slightly feral loganberry and spiced plum fruit. Wood and light toast is gaining some ground here but there are emerging notes of asphalt, dried grass and flowers as well that parry that thrust well. Quite fresh and brisk on entry with plenty of acid and well integrated tannins. A bit extracted and inky on the mid-palate though the acid keeps the fruit of the fresh side and there is considerable cut offered by the mineral and earth tones that emerge on the backend. The tannins are just stretching the fruit and turn a bit powdery on the finish. Finishes with a sweet flourish of fruit then the mineral reasserts itself providing nice contrast to the blackberry/black cherry finale. Admirable length and plenty of fruit though perhaps not typical Hermitage profile this is pretty good stuff! Probably needs another 2 years for the tannins to fully integrate and should drink well for 8-10 years after that. 2010-2020 92pts
Really nice nose of white pepper, figs, Christmas spice and berries. Nicely aged, with some pleasant mustiness, figs and smooth tannins. Nice long finish on soft eastern spices.
Very ripe rich dried dark fruit flavors. Palate is slightly hot but it's gratifying. Very complex flavors, some chocolate and tree bark. Rustic. Thick and refreshing and coats the mouth quite well. Finish is slightly medicinal, long and leaves me wanting more.
Big nose with lots of copper and iron. Fruity, spicy, and complex with a long elegant finish. Really great subtle aged flavor that reminds me of a grand old chateauneuf du pape with its gaminess. Hot damn I'm giving this a 5 - I can't think of any way to improve this.
I feel like this wine loves me, and for good reason! No, not really. A perfectly balanced montage of every flavor that I love, a little gamey, vanilla, blackberry, mint, oak, swiss cheese, rosemary, meaty lamb. Many thanks to Gregory for sharing this one.
Smooth. Very smooth. This is an outstanding wine.
Well done, but still disappointing for the price !!

Since Champagne house Louis Roederer acquired Delas Freres in 1993, renovating the cellars and bringing in a talented team of winemakers, their wines have returned to top form. The company has substantial vineyard ownership of 50 acres, of which 22 are in the regal Hermitage appellation. 'Marquise de la Tourette' is a composite of multiple sites or climats on the steep, south facing hill, including Les Bessards, l'Hermite, and Sabot. The 2003 has been rated in the '90's' by two US critics, and America's leading Rhone authority described the wine as having great intensity, full body, and a long, concentrated finish. Hermitage is one of the longest lived red wines in the world, and this 2003 is likely to improve until 2020 and beyond.
