Editorial Reviews for Delas Freres Cotes du Rhone Saint Esprit White
Wow this is intense right from the get go with well integrated wood spice backing up deep, slightly feral loganberry and spiced plum fruit. Wood and light toast is gaining some ground here but there are emerging notes of asphalt, dried grass and flowers as well that parry that thrust well. Quite fresh and brisk on entry with plenty of acid and well integrated tannins. A bit extracted and inky on the mid-palate though the acid keeps the fruit of the fresh side and there is considerable cut offered by the mineral and earth tones that emerge on the backend. The tannins are just stretching the fruit and turn a bit powdery on the finish. Finishes with a sweet flourish of fruit then the mineral reasserts itself providing nice contrast to the blackberry/black cherry finale. Admirable length and plenty of fruit though perhaps not typical Hermitage profile this is pretty good stuff! Probably needs another 2 years for the tannins to fully integrate and should drink well for 8-10 years after that. 2010-2020 92pts
paler than the Tourette- funky, gamey, grilled wild animal, a hint of vanillin, hot rocks, boysenberry, white pepper, bit of wood spice, red raspberry, really nice nose – still youthful, very bright in the mouth, excellent intensity of flavor in a decidedly medium bodied package, tannins still a bit dominant, bit of smoky mintiness, very mineral across the palate with hints of tar and licorice leading to a cherry stone finish, finishes very long and succulent, bloody, lots of amarena cherry as well. This is excellent stuff, very traditional feel, very complex, lithe in the mouth, better with another 2-3 years but I can drink this now and be very happy

Fermented tobacco, green olive juice and a nice touch of limestone. Elegant and refined in the mouth with early meaty, gamy juices followed by green tobacco, peppercorn, caper, herb, salt, black olive, mineral, smoke and stem. The structure here is rather light in appearance but firm in nature. The meat juice and green peppercorn notes linger on the long finish. Huge grapevine smoky scents and super fine tobacco smoke smells enchanting. Just a little lean on the mid-palate with chalky tannins on the finish, this feels at peak with a bit more to show. 92pts
youthful and moderately dark – at first minerally before turning a bit floral over a strong animal/furry base, smokey with spicy old wood, fennel and dill notes adding complexity to the very high toned dried cranberry/ blackberry fruit, nice barnyard and old wood nuances- juicy in the mouth, great acidity, lovely ripeness with great balance and near perfect integration, briary spice up front leads into medium full bodied mouthfeel that is rich if slightly monolithic, gamey on the finish which is a touch short but echoes the mineral and cedar aspects. At peak and holding, could be a bit more complex but the wonderful mouthfeel and balance compensate a bit for a very satisfying experience
The wine is a lovely deep ruby to purple color, and the nose is thick with ripe fruit, blackberry and plum, and a nice bit of spice that balances the fruit very well. There is also a good bit of earthiness too, somewhat reminiscent of the forest after a spring shower that reminds me of the flavors of black truffles. The wine is quite fruit forward, with a lovely balance of ripe black fruit, black pepper and a bit of tartness that doesn't come from the tannins, but I believe comes more from the fruit itself - very interesting. The wine is quite flavorful throughout, reaching a crescendo of cherry cola flavor midpalate, which gives way to tannins that are well structured providing for a very pleasing finish. Light, tart, and very drinkable.
It is a well-balanced, well-made wine. It is towards the lighter side than medium and has a very abrupt finish that is a bit on the acidic side. The problem I have with this wine is that it doesn't compare well with a good Syrah nor does it compare well with a good Grenache. It is a new world wine and so might appeal more to American tastes than people used to more traditional Cotes-du-Rhones.
Color ruby-red, nose has mild bubblegum and mild sweet ripe red fruit. On the attack tart raspberry, followed by light to medium body, moderate acid, and lighter tannins. Short finish with lingering tart fruit and nut flavor.
Tasty southern French wine bordering on the complex with deep, tasty dark fruit. On non-decanted bottle, tight nose with hints of tar and fresh wet stone. In the mouth pleasantly bitter deep dry blackberry, cassis with hints of fig, earth, and pepper. Not sour. Finishes with hint of machine or nut oil and wood and leather. Medium body, medium plus acid, medium plus drying tannins.
This is realy deep purple. The first night this bottle was open the tannins and acidity overwhelmed the other flavors in this wine. On the second night the wine had opened up and was showing nice bright cherry and blackberry. This is a great bottle for the price.

Bright violet. Expansive bouquet shows boysenberry and blueberry liqueur Moroccan spices violet and woodsmoke. Lush seductively sweet black and blue fruit flavors stain the palate picking up suave spice and floral qualities with aeration. The finish shows a suave floral character and clings tenaciously. The tannins of this vibrant rich wine are very nicely integrated. Stephen Tanzers IWC.
