What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

Rating: 86/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger in Issue 19, 3rd Quarter, 2005 An elegant, relatively high-toned nose of red pinot fruit, spice and a touch of warm earth aromas introduces rich, full even lush medium full flavors that possess very supple tannins and an acceptably long finish. While I like the overall mouth feel and finishing complexity, the acidity sticks out fairly sharply on the backend, bringing the finish to an abrupt halt. This impression is diminished though not eliminated with food. Approachable now though it will clearly age for several years.

Rating: 89/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 120, May/June 2005 ($42; 14.7% alcohol) Good medium red. Spicy, nuanced nose combines currant, plum, loam, mint and licorice. Firm and spicy, with flavors of dark berries and licorice. Offers more cut and thrust than the Goldridge bottling, and finishes with firm-edged tannins.
