Inky ruby. Ripe cherry and singed plum on the nose, with a smoky overtone. This rich and weighty wine offers ripe dark fruit compote flavors and a chewy texture. On the tarry side: this could use more energy.

Tinto Pesquera is the flagship wine produced by Alejandro Fernández at a bodega he founded in 1972 in Ribero del Duero, Spain. He is known for being one of the pioneers of the modern Ribera del Duero industry, seeking out vineyard designations and using techniques that no one in the area had explored before. Pesquera was originally produced using a 16th century winepress, which can still be found there today. He introduced the espalier system (tying vines to a trelis) to the area, planting new Tempranillo vines as well as saving old ones, which would eventually lend themselves to the outstanding character of this distinguished wine.  Read less

The 2004 Dehesa la Granja offers similar but more expressive aromatics, is rounder and more supple on the palate, and has outstanding depth, concentration, and length. It is more forward than the 2003 but should offer a similar drinking window.

Toasty and smoky notes frame a core of plum and earth flavors in this austere red, which has chewy tannins and a smoky, cedary finish. Tempranillo.
