What to Expect

Carmenère is one of a small group of wines that thrives in its adopted land but struggles to gain acceptance at home. It still is used on occasion in France's Bordeaux region where it adds color and complexity to blends with its distinctive mélange of smoky, herbal and gamy tones. In South America, particularly Chile, it ripens fully and the wines take on added layers of dark berry fruit that gives it a balance rarely achieved in France.

Coming from alluvial soils near the Maipo Valley, this Carmenere is profound and powerful -a multilayer construction of blackberry, chocolate, spices and herb flavors supported by opulent tannins and sharp acidity. Everything about this select-level Carmenere is impressive. It's colorful and wrapped in a cloak of classy oak. The palate is juicy and balanced to a tee, with dark berry flavors busting free. A little young oak emerges on the finish, but it vanishes in short order once you air things out. A wonderful red wine regardless of variety. Wine Enthusiast 92 Points

The DeMartino family has been producing wine in Chile's famous Maipo Valley for almost 70 years. Delicate use of oak adds complexity, but the strength of DeMartino wines is in the fruit- resulting in big, rich, extracted flavors. Legado Reserva wines are made in limited production on the family estate using only the ripest hand-picked fruit. This signature Chilean wine is produced from hand-picked grapes from the family estate. It has a beautiful red color with traces of ruby. The nose abounds with ripe red fruits and shows marvelous intensity. On the palate, it is full-bodied with smooth tannins.
