De Bortoli Shiraz 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Decidedly beefy on the nose with an underlay of dried herbs, cracked pepper, smoky wood notes, fresh woodsy mushrooms and wild plums. Soft and open on entry with a juicy, plummy entry, some light spice notes and a hint of vanilla on the midpalate that leads to a fresh and brightly fruity finish. Medium bodied and well balanced in a an easy to appreciate style. 86pts

De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Bortoli in 1928. The couple emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the historic town of Asolo. Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, (b 1936 – d 2003) expanded and consolidated the business created by his parents. Deen's children established De Bortoli's reputation for premium wine including icon dessert wine Noble One and the Yarra Valley wines. Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values, there is a culture of hard work, generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and good times with family and friends. Below is a video of the De Bortoli family taken as part of the Australia's First Families of Wine joint marketing initiative which involves some of Australia's oldest and most respected wine families. Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

It's hard to go wrong with Australian Shiraz. This one's not bad for the price. (2008). A screw cap wine. 86 pts

Almost a purple red in color. Aromas of pepper and spice. Rich berry taste with a background of white pepper in an overall very dry wine. Good flavor but slightly overpowering. Hard to drink alone but would go well with a meat dish or something with a lot of spice.

Fruity and ripe. Medium to full and an easy to drink choice
