/ Deep red. Cherry-vanilla, strawberry preserves and cola on the nose, along with subtle tobacco, leather and baking spice notes. A fleshy midweight musky red berry flavor and dusty herbs; picks up floral qualities with air. Tannins make a late appearance but serve to frame the sweet red fruit flavors which extend through a sappy finish.

Rioja de Autor Reserva Especial 1998 - 90 points, Wine Spectator/ Sandalwood, tobacco and leather notes mingle in this traditional red. This is plush on the palate, with dried cherry and kirsch flavors, almost syrupy, supported by modest tannins and still quite fresh.

/ Browning and maturing, but still showing a ton of life and kick. This traditional-style wine is mildly roasted on the nose, with touches of leather, latex and other firm aromas. The palate is nice, with dry raspberry and cherry flavors finishing with power and length. Solid and respectable.

Tax Time Bargains and Splurges/ You won't see a lot of current release wines from the 1995 vintage around...however, the wine is still very youthful, and will likely get better every year for the next decade . Although this blend of 86% Tempranillo and 14% Graciano was matured entirely in new French oak for a full three years, the concentrated fruit has effectively counterbalanced the wood and actually retained some primary sweetness after this rigorous regimen. Now bottled for more than eight years, it is just unwinding to show some secondary aromas, and though it is certainly enjoyable now, it would best be aged until about 2010.

/ Mature but not even close to expiring, with cola, root beer, tree bark and leather on the bouquet. Fairly acidic, which is why it has so much verve at 10+ years. Flavors of dried cherry, raspberry and citrus peel are classic in their attack. Very good in an Old World way.
